Welcome, and thanks for trying Fileclass 🎉

Fileclass is the schema & data-quality layer for Obsidian: typed, validated, per-note-type property schemas ("fileClasses") with guided input — powered by the core Bases plugin. It's the successor to Metadata Menu (same author), rebuilt frontmatter-only with no Dataview dependency.

Status

Not yet in the community plugin store (review pending). To install manually, download main.js, manifest.json and styles.css from the latest release into <vault>/.obsidian/plugins/fileclass/.

• 🐞 Found a bug? → open an Issue with the Bug report form. Please include your fileClass definition and steps to reproduce — Fileclass is schema-driven, so bugs can't be reproduced without them.

A few things that save everyone time

• ⚠️ Don't run Metadata Menu and Fileclass at the same time. MDM is now in maintenance mode.
• Your existing fileClass definitions work as-is — the Metadata Menu format is unchanged.
• Lookup / Formula are out of scope — use Bases views for reverse relations and computed columns.
• Please search first and use the issue forms. Structure is what keeps a solo-maintained project responsive. 🙏

Hi @mdelobelle, I was starting to learn and use metadata menu but I like a lot base simplicity so I would instead move directly on Fileclass.

I would like to ask you if it is possible using Fileclass to select a set of value to be returned in a field referring to a value from another field.

I try to better explain,I have a Domain field and a Type one depending from domain. So as an example Domain could be earth and type should be desert, rocks and so one.

I would fill the Domain field with a word and I would like to see only notes with the same value for Domain as a suggestion for Type.

I could use this.Domain if the bases is embedded in the current file but I'm not sure that is what Fileclass does when it evaluates the base file.

I don't know if it a dumb question but I'm just starting to understand Fileclass files so I'll try in the next days to do a test. Thank you in advance for your help.

P.S. I could workaround it creating a base file for each possible Domain value but it it is possible to use only a base, I could avoid to spam the vault with several nearly identical files.

Short version: yes, this.Domain is exactly right — Fileclass evaluates the bound base with the note you're editing as the context, so a single base file is enough. Full example + gotchas in the Q&A. 🙂
