v4.0.0 β€” Name That Tune

Until now, Beatify asked one question: what year did this song come out? Version 4.0 adds a whole new way to play β€” just type the title and the artist. It's the biggest update since launch: a second, fully standalone game mode, a reveal that turns close calls into a live vote, and a set of end-of-game awards built for it. Plus the album art now stays in step with the music, and the usual round of catalog care.

🎡 The new mode β€” Title & Artist

Instead of guessing the year, you answer in free text: song title (+10) and artist (+5), each scored on its own. You don't have to be letter-perfect β€” small typos and near spellings are recognised automatically and earn partial points. Typo forgiveness scales with the title length: a short title like "Queen" still needs near-exact spelling, while "Smells Like Teen Spirit" forgives up to five typos. Only genuinely close guesses reach the room for a vote β€” plainly wrong answers are marked Wrong and scored zero immediately. Movie and Intro bonuses still stack on top.

🎭 Crowd Court β€” the reveal is now a verdict

When your guess is a close call, the reveal becomes a live courtroom. A big card shows your guess with a glowing countdown ring, running πŸ‘/πŸ‘Ž tally bars, and full-width vote buttons. Cast your vote and it sticks β€” your choice stays lit with a βœ“, and you can still tap to change your mind. The vote window runs for 30 seconds so the room has time to weigh in.

The TV shows the same vote in real time β€” each near-miss guess with its live tally and countdown β€” so the whole room can watch the debate unfold, not just the players on their phones. When the window closes, every close call gets a clear verdict: accepted βœ“ +points or rejected βœ— with its final πŸ‘/πŸ‘Ž count.

After the vote settles, the reveal leads with how you did overall: "Nailed it!" (green glow), "Got one!" (half credit), or "Not this time." While the room is still deciding, it reads "Awaiting the room's verdict…" rather than calling it a miss too early.

🧭 Pick your game mode up front

The setup wizard now opens with two clear cards β€” πŸ“… Year or ✍️ Title & Artist. The matching settings appear automatically: the year-distance difficulty picker shows only in Year mode, replaced by a fixed "Title 10 Β· Artist 5 Β· Partial 5/3" summary in Title & Artist mode. The "Ready to play" summary names your chosen mode, and a new card in the first-join tour introduces the mode to players.

πŸ† End-of-game awards made for Title & Artist

When a Title & Artist game wraps, the final screen hands out awards that fit how you actually played. πŸ’― Perfect Pair goes to whoever nailed the most rounds with the title and the artist. 🧠 Name Dropper crowns the player with the most spot-on titles, and 🎀 Artist Whisperer finally gives credit to the one who always knows the artist. And for the player who kept just missing? 🀏 So Close is theirs.

πŸ–ΌοΈ The cover matches the music again

If you'd noticed the dashboard or the in-game view still showing the previous song's cover after the music had moved on, that's fixed. Beatify now waits for the real artwork to land before it puts it on screen, so each new round shows its own cover instead of the last one. Thanks to @Dtrieb for spotting it and sending a clear example.

🎡 Catalog care

A handful of release years corrected β€” EMF's "Unbelievable", JΓΌrgen Drews' "Ein Bett im Kornfeld", Modern Talking's "Brother Louie Mix '98", two Anastasia soundtrack songs, and HΓΆhner's "Mir Kumme Mit Allemann Vorbei" β€” plus a wrong YouTube Music link repaired in motown-soul-classics. Most caught by players using the in-game "wrong year" flag, the rest by the weekly automated playlist health-check.

πŸ”§ Under the Hood

  • The Title & Artist vote countdown is server-authoritative β€” it re-syncs on every update, so a skewed phone clock or a late join no longer shows the wrong number.
  • The album-art fix landed with full automated test coverage for the metadata wait, including the transient-flicker edge case.
  • Admin buttons were realigned to the design-system tokens, and the onboarding tour now derives its card count from the page so new cards need no code change.
  • CI now pins its linter to a fixed version, so a formatter update can no longer turn main red on its own.

πŸ™ Thank you

The new mode was built by @jgossen01 β€” thank you for this huge contribution β€” from an idea originally raised by @Hendrik0123. To @Dtrieb for catching the wrong album cover and reporting it precisely. To everyone who flagged a wrong year from inside a game this release β€” every flag triggers a manual check, and they add up. And to everyone who tested the mode on real devices and keeps installing each build: most of this release is your ideas.
