I am facing this issue in debugging my code. Always getting this output (pasted inline).
I checked for solution online and tried the solution mentioned to set up an environment variable but it didn’t worked.

Hi, I've tried to update my VS to the lastet version, but my error wasn't from the VS version, it was from my code.

My class did not have the [TestClass] annotation in the declaration and that was cause.

This issue is well and alive. I already fixed it by installing update to VS17.
For example, if you declare

public static TestContext Context { get; set; }

You will get this behavior. Why not give the message like "TestContext should be non-static". Instead we have to break the head what went on. Especially, coincident that create new test doesn't create this property

I had either this same error or something very similar. The root cause was a malformed config file in my C# assembly. Although I've gotten similar errors when not all of the assemblies in the solution compiled to the same CPU architecture. Project Properties > Debug > Active (Any CPU). Just leaving notes so I can find this again...

Had the same problem and resolved this issue by changing the platform target from x64 to any CPU on Properties > Build > Platform target > Any CPU.
