Runtime error: Failed to update PowerShell profiles

I've tried the installer coreutils-2026.5.29-x64 on windows 11 x64 25H2 (ran as admin) and I got this error:

Runtime error (at 24:933):
Failed to update PowerShell profiles.

Powershell is 7.6.2 and Windows Terminal 1.24.11321.0 (both latest stable).

Same here. Can not uninstall the package either with the same error message.

Could you please do the following in an elevated (admin) powershell?

git clone https://github.com/microsoft/coreutils.git
cd coreutils
git checkout v2026.5.29
pwsh -NoProfile -NonInteractive -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File .\src\pwsh-install.ps1 -Action Uninstall -Scope CurrentUser
Write-Host $LASTEXITCODE

If you have installed the powershell profile for all users, please use -Scope AllUsers.

Please let me know what output you see when you run this!

I don't see any meaningful output.

In that case I don't understand why the uninstaller was failing for you... That's the precise command that it calls to unregister the profiles. (You see this in coreutils.iss when you search for "Failed to update PowerShell profiles" and look slightly above it.)

If you uninstall coreutils now does it complete successfully?

No, it's still giving the error.

I tried running the command above in the installation directory, but the exit code is still 0.

Do you maybe have multiple pwsh.exe installed? Maybe it picks the wrong one.

Oh, I see. There's no pwsh.exe in the system!

OMG! I made sure to check for pwsh.exe during installation but forgot to do so during uninstallation!

You can of course work around this by temporarily installing pwsh 7. I'll try to release a fixed version soon.
