Remove leftovers of cache implementation #813
Description
The code to actually cache tasks and check the cache was removed in #356 for unknown reasons, but at this point it's been gone for 6 years and our own practice and recommendation has shifted to using lage for caching and task orchestration anyway. So it's probably best to just remove the remnants of the caching code in a major version bump.
