Running MarkItDown as a standing REST service (not just a CLI call)
We kept reaching for MarkItDown as a one-off CLI conversion inside scripts, then ended up wanting it as a small always-on HTTP service instead — one endpoint, POST a file, get Markdown back — so a RAG ingestion pipeline or an internal tool could call it over the network instead of shelling out to the library on every request.
The wiring that actually matters if you do this:
We ended up packaging this as a Railway template (
ghcr.io/bon5co/markitdown-api-auth, a thin wrapper arounddezoito/markitdown-apiwith the bearer-token auth and temp-cleanup handled) — full disclosure, I maintain it and get a kickback if someone deploys through the Railway link: https://railway.com/deploy/markitdown-api?referralCode=Z1xivhIf you don't want Railway specifically, the same idea works anywhere with persistent storage and an env var:
dezoito/markitdown-apiimage, setAPI_BEARER_TOKEN, put a proxy in front of it. The auth and cleanup wiring is the part worth getting right regardless of where it runs. All reactions
