[BUG] Azure MCP takes up about 30G of memory and about 89% of CPU without even starting

Describe the bug

Had a look at my processes when I noticed something was eating up all my ram and noticed the 'azmcp' process eating about 32G of virtual memory.

I didn't get a screenshot of that, but I did get a screenshot of 'ps auxw' where azmcp is taking up about 89% of my cpu (see attached).

Expected behavior

Not use all the resources on my machine.

Actual behavior

Used all the resources on my machine

Reproduction Steps

Given the user has a Mac m4 mini, install vscode then install the Azure map server (preview).

Environment

Machine Specs:

• Apple m4 mini, 32GB ram
• Azure MCP installed via vscode
• no end-user configuration of the MCP server (nothing changed from the vscode defaults)

1. When you start VS Code and open GitHub Copilot, does high memory usage from azmcp happen every time?
2. Does it occur without actively using azmcp (just VS Code + Copilot open and idle)? Or does it require specific actions (e.g., “Copilot” to use azmcp for tool invocation)?
3. Do you see multiple azmcp running when this happens (you can use ps -axo pid,rss,args | grep azmcp | grep -v grep | awk '{printf "%s\t%.1f MB\t",$1,$2/1024; for(i=3;i<=NF;i++) printf "%s ",$i; print ""}'

Hi there!

Thanks so much for the quick response.

It happens when idle, does not require the use of copilot to my knowledge (although copilot is installed and I believe the azure map is selected).

I'm not entirely sure if it happens every time, but it definitely has occurred at least twice in the past, both times on long-running vscode instances.

I'm not actually using copilot during the high-usage periods, but some things that I did do during that session (not sure if related):

1. Used a remote connection to connect and install AI Toolkit and Chat on a remote linux (popos) machine
2. Added the Chroma MCP server to the Installed MCP servers inside of vscode.

I'll try and replicate a third time today and let you know wha tI find.
