"Recent" files, folders and workspaces #100421

As a software engineer, I cannot comprehend the difference between all the variations of "recent" and find all of them unusable.

Available functions:

  1. File > Open Recent (shows recent folders, separator, recent files)
  2. CTRL+SHIFT+P, "File: Open Recent" (doesn't match well with above)
  3. CTRL+SHIFT+P, "File: Quick Open Recent" (similar to above, I have no clue what's the difference)

As if that wasn't enough, to make it worse, "File > Save As" doesn't seem to add to recent, or at least not in a meaningful way I can understand.

  1. CTRL+E's "Go to File..." list which resembles a version of "recent files" but is affected by Save/Save As operations.

Is it possible to get rid of all 4 variations and simplify - 3 clear and separate commands seem to make sense? Opening in a list with support for CTRL-TABing would be an extra-useful bonus. When appropriate Save/Save As must affect lists, new and unsaved files can be also listed (perhaps a setting for that?)

  • Go to recent file
  • Go to recent folder
  • Go to recent workspace
