setting variables inconsistently applied

It is not clear when settings variables will work, does vscode do the interpretation or is it up to the extension? It is really frustrating to have this feature only sometimes work. As someone who tries to use the same settings on multiple machines I heavily rely on being able to use ${userHome} and ${env:LOTSOFSTUFF} to make extensions work across macos and linux systems.

1. set the setting "git.path": "${userHome}/.nix-profile/bin/git",
