Type: Performance Issue

Hello, I somehow, accidently put all my computer files into Visual Studio under "Downloads." I tried deleting "removing" one file but it seemed to remove it from my computer as well and out it in my recycle bin.

How do I remove all these files safely?

It sounds like after you opened your Downloads folder you clicked the option to initialize a Git repository for this folder.

Here's what I suggest:

1. Close VS Code
2. Open your Downloads folder in Windows Explorer.
3. If a hidden (low-intensity) folder named ".git" isn't shown, use the Show submenu of Explorer's View menu to enable display of hidden items.
4. Rename the .git folder that shoul now be visible. I suggest calling it ".Xgit"
5. Launch VS Code again, open the Downloads folder and confirm that it no longer identifies a Git repository there or lists all your files as untracked (U decorator on them).
6. Go back to Windows Explorer and delete the ".Xgit" folder.

Hello, After searching for the .git folder, there seems to be multiple files. 3 files with = vscode.git 7 files with = vscode.github 1 file with = vscode.github-authentication and 5 other random ones that are = git, Git Formats, git-base, github and github-authentication. There are no "dots" in these 5 file names. Thanks for the help.

If my theory about what you originally did is correct then you're looking for a folder that is an immediate subfolder of your Downloads folder and is named .git

But it is likely to be tagged in Windows as Hidden, hence my instructions about making your Windows Explorer show Hidden items.

I did go to"view, show, and click show hidden files." Oddly enough, the files downloaded into VScode are not just files in my Downloads folder. There are also files from my external hard drive. Therefore, I went to "This PC" and searched .git and the files I listed in my previous email are the ones that are showing up, even as hidden. [image: Screenshot 2023-11-01 080607.png]

Please also explain what "downloaded into VSCode" means.

Ideally you will document the exact steps you took in VS Code to get into this state.

That's the thing. I have know idea what I did to import my whole computer into the Visual Studio software. I know nothing about code, I was trying to learn. I barely understand what you're asking to me to do as it is. All I know is my whole computer has been transferred to the VS software and if it's deleted it removes it from my actual computer. I'm in freak out mode a little here. I don't know if I'm going to be able to understand your emails enough to do what you're asking. A screen share "join.me" or something would be way more helpful. Please let me know.

If you don't want to use VS Code ever again, use Windows Add/Remove Programs to uninstall it.

Alternatively, start at https://code.visualstudio.com/docs to view some videos and read some documentation that could help you learn to use it.
