[Bug] Broken cursor navigate in text editor using command prompt

Does this issue occur when all extensions are disabled?: Yes/No

• VS Code Version: 1.84.2
• OS Version: macOS Sonoma 14.1

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Open file in text editor, which is using tabs for indentation
2. try to navigate cursor to some location using command prompt
3. CTRL/CMD + P
4. insert eg. :3,6 // depends on your file

@djelinek I have tried, but I do not observe any problem. Can you please provide a sample text, the location you type, where the cursor goes vs where you expect the cursor to go.

I am sorry I was on PTO for some time and was not able to get back to you in time. I can see that issue is already closed, but I was able to reproduce the issue also with latest VS Code 1.85.1 (see recording below)

Thank you for the recording, this is helpful in clarifying your issue. Those two do not refer to the same thing.

• the cmd+p input box references line number and character, this is defined as the UTF16 offset into a line. This is what most compilers output as errors, and is useful for copy-pasting locations from compilers, etc.
• the status bar displays "an approximation of the visual column where the cursor is displayed". This approximation is correct for monospace fonts and simple left-to-right text (like most source code or like in your example). In your example the tab size is configured to be 4 characters, so the displayed value is 1 before the tab and 5 after the tab even if there is a single character in between visual column 1 and visual column 2.
