UI becomes unresponsive when opening workspace with Copilot installed #280253

Type: Bug

When I open a certain workspace with the Copilot extension installed, VSCode becomes unresponsive. After a couple of minutes, it unfreezes and I see a UnresponsiveSampleError in logs, but the extension isn't active.

This issue began immediately after updating VSCode to the latest version, though I'm not sure it's related.

I've tried numerous things while debugging:

  • Using the pre-release version of Copilot
  • Disabling all extensions besides Copilot
  • Clearing all sorts of caches/settings; I can't even recall exactly which

I eventually found that the problem only affects one specific workspace file. If I replace the workspace file's content with an empty JSON object, I still experience the freeze. If I copy-paste the workspace file and open it with a different file name, the freeze doesn't happen.

It seems like this has to do with some sort of workspace-related cache, but I can't figure out what.

I've attached the logs with the UnresponsiveSampleError. I also have a trace if necessary, but it's fairly large.
