Downloaded update lost on quit, triggers re-download

Does this issue occur when all extensions are disabled?: Yes

• VS Code Version: Latest Stable (Version: 1.111.0)
• OS Version: macOS (Darwin arm64 25.3.0)

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Open VS Code and let it download an update automatically.
2. When "Update is ready, click to restart" appears, quit the app using Cmd+Q instead of restarting.
3. Reopen VS Code.

Expected:
VS Code should apply the downloaded update on next launch, or at least not re-download it.

Actual:
The update is not applied. When checking for updates again, VS Code downloads the same update again.

Notes:
In many other apps, once the update is downloaded, quitting and reopening applies it. At minimum, it should avoid downloading the same update twice (e.g., by verifying checksum).

Thanks for creating this issue! It looks like you may be using an old version of VS Code; the latest stable release is 1.112.0. Please try upgrading to the latest version and checking whether this issue remains.

This response isn’t really applicable to this issue. To reproduce and test the behavior, you actually need to be on an older version. Also, this bug has existed for quite a while-if it hasn’t been fixed, it’s very likely still present in the latest release.
