Some questions about DeviantArt results

Hello.

I would like to know how gallery-dl retrieves images from DeviantArt at the resolutions it does. I have set up gallery-dl for DeviantArt's OAuth if that matters. I expect this only matters for situations where the post's download button is disabled.

For reference, DeviantArt says the original image is 2000x4000 at 11.73 MB posted in 2012.

Gallery-dl downloads that image as a 1732x3464 PNG at 8.99 MB. From my browser, the best I can do is a 1600x3200 PNG at 12.6 MB, which does seem a little worse visually than the copy gallery-dl produced. I know in the URL I can change fullview.jpg to png and q_80 to 100, but changing the w_1600,h_3200 resolution to the values of gallery-dl's copy only produces a Forbidden page.

1. How is gallery-dl getting a superior version?

2. Can gallery-dl also output a link that can be opened in a browser leading the same copy that it downloaded? I'd like a source link to upload/link elsewhere or at least to demonstrate that gallery-dl's copy is normally accessible.

3. Can I manually change DeviantArt image links or somehow manually navigate to the copy that gallery-dl downloads?

4. Would whatever gallery-dl does to acquire these superior images be considered exploiting a bug? That was my understanding for the jwt method which recently stopped working. Our site doesn't want to host content acquired from exploiting bugs and similar circumventions.

1. gallery-dl is simply getting what the dA API returns
2. Have you tried gallery-dl -g <YOUR_URL>?
3. Well, you can manually generate a list of links, if that is your question. But note that they may expire eventually.
   • You cannot change the response that's send out by dA, though.
4. No, definitely not. The "jwt method" you describe could be considered such (debatable), but not what's the result of dA's API.
