Convert a descriptive profile into a single value between 0 -> 1 using PCA

Let's imagine that you've got a set of measurements. Let's say you've
actually got two independent sets. Lets say you want to graph the first set
of measurements (somehow) and you'd like to colour this graph based on the
second set. Then the first thing you'll need to do is convert each row in the
second set into an integer, say between 0 and 1. Wouldn't it be nice if there
was a script which did just that. Y'know, converted a profile into a value...
