I guess I felt like this was sufficient:

The general workflow is that a github trigger is received (push), gitreload checks that the respository and branch are already checked out in the configured location, and then either runs a command to import that repository into the edx-platform via a ... manage.py lms --settings=... git_add_course <repo_dir> <repo_name> command, or if the trigger is set to go to /update instead of / or /gitreload it will simply fetch the newset version of the currently checked out branch from the origin remote.

That's what was thinking too. It seems that, for anyone who might find gitreload useful, stating that it's a webhook consumer that runs the git_add_course django command is enough to know exactly what it automates and why it's useful.

@Ferdi Are you looking for a bit of a higher level explanation? It might be best explained that gitreload is the answer to the following story:

As a course content developer, I want the residential stacks I'm developing against to always be in sync with my course's GitHub repository, so that my team can quickly and easily...

1. test my team's changes on centralized, production-duplicative environments
2. apply fixes or add content to my live course

It looks like MIT is using github to manage course content , a repository for each course. This enables syncing live course content with github.

If true, that is what I was looking for. I didnt know about git_add_course command. I think there might be other people that e.g. evaluate using edx platform and would be interested knowing how this app helps.

Does this respond only to commit events or is more generic ? Can I extend beyond adding/updating live course content. What do I need to do to e.g. send an e-mail to course team members when a commit is made or a person is added in the course staff team via github ?

I'll maybe take a swag at updating the README to have some common use cases including the two we use it for (xserver/xqwatcher and edx-platform course development/deploy)

It currently responds to push events fired from github, but no reason to limit it to that if you want to respond to other events.

It would be simple to add this in the processing actions, or creating a new processing action, but currently this is not supported. You can always use the myriad of other github trigger integrations to do almost anything, this one is just has two actions right now, update repo or import course from github.
