First alpha of Mocka Dock, a taskbar-style dock applet for the MATE panel, for GhostBSD testers.

This release is for testing. Expect missing features and rough edges, and please report what you find.

What works

  • Pinned and running apps in one row of buttons, one button per app, on horizontal and vertical panels of any size.
  • Apps are recognized by their desktop entry, including web apps from Chromium-based browsers and entries made by menu editors.
  • Left click launches, activates or minimizes. With several windows, a list of them opens. Middle click or Shift + click opens a new instance.
  • The launched app's button pulses while it starts.
  • Minimize and restore animations go to the app's button.
  • Pinning: from the right-click menu, by dragging an app from the menu, the desktop or the file manager, and reordering by drag. Unpinning shows an Undo popup.
  • Several docks share the same pinned apps.
  • App menu (right click): the app's desktop actions, its recent files, a new instance, Pin or Unpin, and Close window or Close all windows.
  • Window menu (Shift + right click): the standard window menu for the app's last active window.
  • Dock menu (Ctrl + right click, or right click on empty dock space): About, and the panel's Move, Lock and Remove.
  • On an expanded panel the dock fills the free room. Arrows appear when the buttons do not fit.
  • Windows from the current workspace only by default.

Not in this release yet

  • Window thumbnails on hover (next milestone). A list of window titles stands in for them.

  • Super + number shortcuts, mouse wheel window cycling, and attention blinking.

  • The Preferences window. Settings are changed with gsettings meanwhile:

  • Translations.

Known limitations

  • LibreOffice windows cannot be pinned from their right-click menu, because LibreOffice does not name its windows after its modules on FreeBSD. Pinning by dragging Writer, Calc and the others from the menu works.
  • Recent files come from the system's recent files list. Apps that keep their own history (JetBrains IDEs, VS Code, LibreOffice) show none.
  • The dock runs inside mate-panel, so a crash in the dock restarts the panel.

Requirements

FreeBSD or GhostBSD with X11, MATE panel 1.26 or later, GTK 3.24.20 or later, and libwnck 40 or later.

Installing

Build and install from source:

meson setup build
meson compile -C build
sudo meson install -C build
mate-panel --replace &

Then right click the panel, choose Add to Panel, and add Mocka Dock. A GhostBSD package will follow.

Feedback

Please open an issue with what you did, what you expected, and what happened. For an app that lands on the wrong button, run tools/collect-test-data.sh <name> <expected-desktop-id> from the source tree while the app is open, click its window, and attach the file it writes in docs/test-data/.
