Sharing a production reference in case it's useful for this thread.

We've been running LemonCake (https://lemoncake.xyz) as an x402 payment rail for MCP servers — agents get a hard-capped Buyer Key, mint a Pay Token JWT, and pass the gateway with Bearer. Live since early 2026; $1 off-session card charge through the full loop verified 2026-06-02.

Design choices that may be relevant:

• Two-layer credentials: bk_… (Buyer Key, hashed, scoped to one seller, hard-capped) + pt_… (Pay Token JWT, single-use, embedded budget + expiry)
• 402 challenge advertises accepts[] with both buyUrl (human) and mintUrl (machine), plus standard WWW-Authenticate
• Settlement-before-token: charge is committed with a unique charge_ref before the Pay Token is issued; gateway pass is JWT-verify only
• Custody-free: virtual balance = sum of unused Pay Tokens. No pool, never holds funds (FSA-cleared design)
• Dual rail: Stripe off-session (USD) + USDC on Base. Same /g endpoint.
• Pricing: 0% first 3,000 calls, 3% after
