Modrinth showing only a blank white screen when I try to launch it I am using Arch Linux with the AppImage version

Steps to reproduce

1. Install CachyOS
2. Download the latest Modrinth AppImage
3. Open it

Expected behavior

Modrinth to launch normaly

I'm getting the same issue on debian, with the following outpit in console:

KMS: DRM_IOCTL_MODE_CREATE_DUMB failed: Permission denied
KMS: DRM_IOCTL_MODE_CREATE_DUMB failed: Permission denied
Failed to create GBM buffer of size 1195x797: Permission denied

This seems to be related to graphics, so it may matter that I'm on pretty old nvidia proprietary drivers (nvidia-tesla-470-driver 470.256.02-3 on debian) because I have an nvidia GT710

A workaround for now appears to be forcing software rendering. In my specific case of proprietary nvidia drivers, it involved installing mesa-utils and running with

__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=mesa ModrinthApp

It's pretty slow but runs

The root cause seems to be here tauri-apps/tauri#9304

I'm not in any way part of the dev team but of anything involved, butconsidering that quite a lot of people are likely to be on nvidia drivers and that this has not been fixed for almost a year with no solution in sight, IMO it would make sense to switch to a less obscure framework/library that is actually known to work correctly on a wide range of systems. All workarounds make the application way too slow to be usable - even on my pretty beefy ryzen 5900x CPU it runs at about 2FPS. I've been using this PC for a few years now and this has never been an issue in any application, web or not. And this seems to affect much more than just ancient nvidia GPUs, it also affects modern ones like RTX4000 series

Also had this issue on debian with appimage, though using

WEBKIT_DISABLE_DMABUF_RENDERER=1 ./Modrinth\ App_0.9.3_amd64.AppImage

fixed it for me. And yeah, also having the horrible framerate...

Thanks to help from zink developer zmike on irc, I was also able to workaround it using zink driver and got less bad performance (by default doesn't seem to work with nvidia due to lack of DRI3 support)

LIBGL_KOPPER_DRI2=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=mesa GALLIUM_DRIVER=zink MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=zink ModrinthApp

When running the AppImage on fedora, it just gave me a white screen. However, when I ran the RPM it worked. This is my current solution.

I ran into this issue with the RPM version on Fedora. Setting the driver to mesa worked for me. I fixed the desktop file so that I can start it from my application launcher by creating a new script at /usr/bin/ModrinthAppFixed:

export __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=mesa
/usr/bin/ModrinthApp

Then updating the desktop file /usr/share/applications/Modrinth\ App.desktop and replacing the line Exec=ModrinthApp with Exec=ModrinthAppFixed.

Using the zink driver didn't seem to make any difference for me, but I solved the performance issue somewhat by going into Settings > Appearance in the app and toggling "Advanced Rendering" OFF and "Native Decorations" ON.

No need to create another script, you can just inline it in the .desktop file like this:
