all downloads for all content gives me this error: An error occurred I/O error: No such file or directory (os error 2), with a file path listed

I've reached out to support who directed me to reinstall the recommended java, but nothing happens, and they've directed me to reach out here

Steps to reproduce

1. install any form of content (mods, modpacks, etc)
2. download fails
3. error code pops up:

   I/O error: No such file or directory (os error 2), path: /Users/luisolivet/Library/Application Support/ModrinthApp/meta/java_versions/zulu25.34.17-ca-jre25.0.3-macosx_aarch64/zulu-25.jre/Contents/Home/bin/java

I'm seeing the exact same error, with the same missing Java binary being referenced, same Modrinth version, also on macOS (Tahoe 26.0)

Hardware: MacBook Pro 16", 2019, 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 4 GB + built-in Intel UHD Graphics 630 1,536 MB RAM, 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, 1 TB SSD with 200+ GB free.

I'll try updating macOS to see if that changes anything.

Update: no change with macOS Tahoe 26.4.1. It appears like Modrinth is trying to download Java, but it fails for some reason.

Update 2: I did some digging and it appears that the path in which Modrinth expects the java binary is incorrect. Everything up to and including the zulu21.50.19-ca-jre21.0.11-macosx_x64 directory exists, but then based on that directory I see the following:

Modrinth expects:

./zulu-21.jre/Contents/Home/bin/java

Present on my machine:

./Contents/Home/bin/java

zulu21-hierarchy.txt

Update 3: I tried copying the contents of the Contents directory into a new empty zulu-21.jre directory, but unfortunately it gets removed and replaced during the installation process.

I am seeing the same error for Java 25.

Modrinth expects:

./zulu-25.jre/Contents/Home/bin/java

Present on my machine:

./Contents/Home/bin/java

I had the same issue today. Reinstalled and everything, nothing worked.
Except the ff:

1. Modrinth App>Settings>Java Installations
   (Upon checking, they did not have any directories linked for Java 25, 21, etc.)
2. Install JDK 25, 21, etc. from Oracle Website.
3. Upon Installing, go back to Java installations in the Modrinth settings,
4. Click detect on the instances you want. (It should automatically select a path for you upon clicking)
5. Select the Path to the JDK
6. Hit Test
7. Done!

Please fix this, its a critical bug, completely disabling java 21 modpacks from downloading and loading for affected users!!!

Hit this on macOS Apple Silicon with Modrinth App <fill in: Help → About> while installing The Block Academy 1.0.5 — a Fabric 1.21.1 modpack (~475 MB .mrpack, multi-file release where the macOS-arm64 variant is one of four files).

Same error path as OP: ~/Library/Application Support/ModrinthApp/meta/java_versions/zulu21.50.19-ca-jre21.0.11-macosx_aarch64/zulu-21.jre/Contents/Home/bin/java

The cleanup workaround mentioned earlier in this thread doesn't fix it for me:

1. Quit Modrinth App
2. rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/ModrinthApp/meta/java_versions/zulu21*
3. Reopen Modrinth App, retry install
4. Same error reappears

Hardware/OS:

• Apple Silicon (M-series)
• macOS

Happy to attach Modrinth App logs from ~/Library/Logs/ModrinthApp/ (or wherever they live on macOS) if that'd help track this down — let me know what's most useful.

For other folks hitting this and blocked on installing the modpack: CurseForge App and Prism Launcher both work as alternative paths in the meantime. I can confirm Prism fetched from Modrinth worked well.

Been getting this issue too, with Java 21. Installing Java manually worked, but this is still a very big issue.
