Project #000002: Tax Reborn — actual personal-tax calculations on desktop and Android

Preview.10 is a working release with Windows, Mac and Android downloads. The new special-rate AMT flow produces actual positive tax liability, saves it across restarts and writes all 29 Form 6251 Part III lines to the official IRS 2025 PDF packet.

What works in this release

Verified 1099-DIV2a/2b/2d distributions use a complete independent 47-line Schedule D tax worksheet. The new same-capital-basis AMT path completes 6251 lines 12–40, flows AMT through Schedule 2 / 1040 line 17 and exports the actual two-page6251 plus workpapers. An explicit basis confirmation defaults false for old/unreviewed returns.

Open the synthetic AMT example: regular tax is5,413 USD, tentative minimum tax19,037 USD, AMT13,624 USD and refund10,963 USD. On each actual native platform we changed the ISO adjustment100,000 → 0, saw refund24,587 USD, restored 100,000, saved and reopened10,963 USD. The system-exported 12-page PDFs were independently read back against public IRS fixtures for every one of the 29 Part III lines.

Other current workflows include W2/1099 income, ordinary securities, self-employment/SE/QBI, supported deductions and credits, multiple local returns, reviewed local OCR/CSV input, state draft calculations through the attributed OpenTax integration, local backups and official paper preparation. Unsupported variants are visibly blocked. See the live source coverage and release-specific limits.

How REA contributes

REA is used on the original TurboTax 2025 desktop binaries and packaged calculation resources. Original bytes, native function identities and finite mechanism probes are retained privately. The current calculation work connects raw source records through a 475-node final-qualified-dividend dependency with 30 scoped synthetic replays, and through the selected full-AMT resource path. Scheduler work verifies typed blank versus false, user-input protection, round-before-zero and pending extra-filing behavior. The Windows Legacy file branch now has selected known-credential and opaque-body preservation roundtrips; complete tax-field import/writeback remains unfinished.

The App uses independently written code and official IRS rules. Vendor binaries, artwork, resources, keys and decompiler output are not distributed. Source-conditioned probes are not runs of the original application; activated original runs and validated original saved.tax fixtures remain 0. Holding-period qualification still requires actual user/source facts.

Executed acceptance and collaboration

448 host tests passed;399 executed tests passed in real Pyodide, with 1 host-only skip. 152 independent full-AMT cases cover all 29 lines, including 72 positive AMT cases; the separate 825-case AMT audit passes. Windows Setup was actually installed and passed 14 frozen checks plus 11 native GUI checks. Mac's final DMG 324 payload files matched and its real GUI/PDF flow passed. The same-signature Android update preserved prior data and passed real edit/save/cold-reopen/system-PDF-save; exported 1,085,712-byte PDF and installed APK hashes matched. Camera/OCR was not rerun in preview.10.

This is an actively maintained functional preview. Complete TurboTax parity, general.tax compatibility, original pixel/runtime parity, all tax situations and electronic filing remain open. Contributions are welcome for scoped source-to-contract validation, independently expected synthetic tax cases, Windows/IntelMac/mobile acceptance and complete file-format semantics. We will keep publishing reproducible functional releases.
