VitaOS 1.8.4

  • Send a port's game files over Wi-Fi. On an installed port's Store page, press Triangle: VitaOS shows an address and a QR code. Open it in a browser on any computer or phone on the same Wi-Fi, choose the folder with the game files, and they go straight into the folder the port reads. Only while that screen is open, only into that one folder.
  • Update apps automatically. Settings > VitaOS > Update apps automatically: Store apps update by themselves while the Vita is plugged in.
  • Recently added. A new Play collection with the games and ports added lately, newest first, marked NEW for two weeks.
  • All new text is translated into the eight languages.

Files

  • VitaOS.vpk: install with VitaShell over any earlier version, or press Update in Settings; your settings stay.
  • vitaos_ps.suprx: the optional PS plugin (1.3, unchanged).

VitaOS 1.8.3

  • Ready to play. A port's Store page now checks what it needs against your card: each requirement gets a dot (found, missing, or not something VitaOS can check), and the heading says "Ready to play" or "Needs your files". Opening a port from Play or Apps that is still missing its game files or plugins asks first, instead of letting it crash.
  • Crash reports, only if you want. If VitaOS closed unexpectedly, the next start shows a QR code. Scanned with your phone, it opens a GitHub issue already filled in with the VitaOS version, your console model and firmware, and what VitaOS was doing. Nothing is sent unless you submit it; O turns the question off for good.
  • Store screenshots that never loaded now do (some are JPEG pictures with a .png name).
  • Automatic language now really follows your Vita's system language.

Files

  • VitaOS.vpk: install with VitaShell over any earlier version, or press Update in Settings; your settings stay.
  • vitaos_ps.suprx: the optional PS plugin (1.3, unchanged).

Not affiliated with or endorsed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. QR codes: Nayuki's QR Code generator (MIT).

@github-actions github-actions released this 02 Oct 20:27

VitaOS 1.8.2

  • App updates that work. The "N app updates" tile on Home now counts only real updates: many homebrew apps never set a version number (00.00) or keep the default 01.00, and those were being counted as updates that could never install. VitaOS also remembers the version it installed from the Store and compares against that.
  • Update all from Home works even before you have opened the Store, shows "Updating 2 of 3 (45%)" if you press X again, and says how many apps updated when it finishes. If nothing can be installed with one press, it tells you instead of doing nothing.
  • VitaOS no longer offers itself as a Store update: it updates through Settings > Update.
  • Home is quiet by default. The Home music is off unless you turn it on (Settings > Display & sound > Home music), and it no longer sounds gritty when it is on.

VitaOS 1.8.1

Fixes from checking every language on a real Vita:

  • The tab bar fits in every language: in Russian, German and French the last tabs ran into the Wi-Fi icon and the clock. Long tab names now get tighter spacing or slightly smaller text.
  • The Store's section row fits in Japanese (it ran over the app count).
  • The Sleep, Restart and Power off labels no longer overlap in longer languages.
  • The date on Home, the Theme setting and Play's Consoles / Collections hint are translated.

Files

  • VitaOS.vpk: install with VitaShell over any earlier version, or press Update in Settings; your settings stay.
  • vitaos_ps.suprx: the optional PS plugin (1.3, unchanged).

VitaOS 1.8.0

One Store for all of it. The Store now lists VitaHomebrewDB and CBPS-DB together, more than 1,300 apps, and every app hosted on GitHub points at its newest release, so you get the latest build instead of whatever a database last recorded. The list is rebuilt every day.

  • Ports are in. Ports install like any app; you bring the game files from your own copy, as each port's page explains.
  • Nothing hidden. A few entries are listed but cannot be downloaded, with the reason on their page: VPKs that contain a commercial game itself, game data packs, plugins (they need a hand edit to ur0:tai/config.txt), piracy tools, adult content and test uploads.
  • Store pages now say where a listing comes from.

Eight languages. English, Español, Português, Français, Deutsch, Italiano, 日本語 and Русский. Settings > Display & sound > Language; Automatic follows your Vita's system language. Japanese text, including Japanese game titles, now shows properly everywhere.

Japanese text uses Noto Sans JP (SIL Open Font License).

VitaOS 1.7.0

Settings, rebuilt. One section at a time: Display & sound, Battery & power, Network, Storage, VitaOS and About this Vita, with switches you can see instead of menus. Sleep, Restart and Power off are big buttons in the lower left, easy to find and to tap.

Español y Português. Settings > Display & sound > Language. Automatic follows your Vita's system language. There is also a Large text switch.

Battery health. Settings > Battery & power > Battery health shows how much charge your battery still holds compared with new, its charge cycles, and how long a charge really lasts on your Vita (VitaOS measures it while you play). It compares that with Sony's rating for your model and shows what a new battery would give you.

Search the Store. The magnifying glass in the Store's sections searches every app by name, author and description. Store apps also show up in the global search (SELECT).

App updates on Home. When apps you installed from the Store have updates, Home shows an "N app updates" tile. Press X and VitaOS updates them all, one after another.

More

  • Games without a readable picture get their box art from Wikipedia, in the background.
  • Retail and homebrew games installed after your library was built now show up in Play by themselves.
  • Apps lists only applications: games live in Play.
  • Settings > Network > Wi-Fi networks opens the system's Wi-Fi page, and PS brings you back.
  • The search keyboard is full width, easier to tap, and the results get a screen of their own.
  • Each tab has its own underline colour.
  • App icons that failed to load once now try again.
  • The "Your week" card no longer runs into the tiles.

Files

  • VitaOS.vpk: install with VitaShell over any earlier version, or press Update in Settings on 1.6.0; your settings stay.
  • vitaos_ps.suprx: the optional PS plugin (1.3, unchanged).

Not affiliated with or endorsed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Game descriptions and some box art are from Wikipedia.

The VitaOS Store's app list, rebuilt daily from VitaHomebrewDB and CBPS-DB. Not a VitaOS release.

VitaOS 1.6.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Sep 23:18

VitaOS 1.6.0

Updates in one press. When a new VitaOS is out, Settings shows an Update button (press START, or tap it). VitaOS downloads the update, closes, and the small VitaOS Updater app installs it and opens the new VitaOS. No VitaShell, no files to find.

  • VitaOS checks for a new release at most once a day and tells you when one is out.
  • The Updater (VTOSUPDTR) is installed the first time you update; it only ever installs VitaOS itself. Its source is in updater/.
  • If an update cannot download or install, your current VitaOS keeps working and Settings says what went wrong.

Getting 1.6.0 itself: 1.5.0 and earlier do not have the Updater yet, so install this one the usual way (VitaShell, or the Store). From 1.6.0 on, every update is one press in Settings.

VitaOS 1.5.0

What you asked for on r/vitahacks and in messages:

  • PSP art straight from your games. VitaOS now reads each PSP game's own icon, background and real title from the game file itself (ISO, compressed CSO, or EBOOT.PBP), so every PSP game gets art with no internet needed. It also looks for PSP games on xmc0 and grw0 as well as ux0, uma0 and imc0.
  • Box art downloads by itself. Once your games are found and Wi-Fi is on, VitaOS fetches missing box art for your retro games in the background. It used to wait for Settings > VitaOS > Download box art, which most people never found.
  • Game descriptions. A game with no description gets one from Wikipedia the first time you open its details page (Triangle on a game). It is kept on the card, so each game is looked up once.
  • Rename games. Press START on a game's details page to give it your own name. Only VitaOS's lists change; nothing on your card is renamed, and favourites and Recently Played follow the new name.
  • Hide Movies or Music. Settings > VitaOS > Movies tab / Music tab. A hidden tab also leaves the Home row.
  • Films are found in more places: ux0:video and the video folder on every card mount, plus ux0:Movies, ux0:Videos and ux0:data/movies, three folders deep.
  • A film that cannot play now says why. The Vita plays MP4 with H.264 video (up to 960x544 is safest) and AAC audio; H.265/HEVC or 1080p files need converting first, for example with HandBrake's H.264 presets.

VitaOS 1.4.3

The Home row holds still:

  • Tiles never move on their own. Films, music and the week card count as one tile each, whatever they show, so a new album no longer sends the music tile to the end. Tiles that load late are added on the right, and a tile that briefly goes away (news during a refresh) comes back to its old place.
  • Home opens on the game you played last, and the highlight stays there until you touch something; news no longer takes the first spot.
