Star Trek-screens and ring sound for the Spotpear (but might work on other devices as well)

I do like VoipStack and all your hard work, but I don't really like that woman in the background of my Spotpears. Sorry :-)
That needs to be the Starfleet Delta, of course!

So, I created some screens and a ringtone.
Perhaps you can include the screens in the Github repository so people can just enter 'starfleet' as the avatar-ID?
I've also included another ringtone - but I don't think it's customisable through a setting. I hacked it into the YAML regardless :-)

Oh, I made some more modifications to the YAML - When on the dialer, the call idle screen or the settings screen, the screen returns to the animated home screen after 30 seconds of no input (and the backlight dims to 60% as well at that time). When in a call, ringing or Assist, this doesn't happen of course.

I have included my entire YAML-file.
It contains three minor changes:
-The fix for the audio from Assist, for which I have opened an issue as well because it seems like a bug
-Auto-home: after 30 seconds, the interface returns to the home screen (except when in a call, calling, ringing or using Assist)
-I changed the paths for audio and images, because I wanted to include my own theme and ringtone.flac

Perhaps change 1 and 2 might be of interest. Change 3 is just a personal modification.
If you compare the file to vanilla yaml for the Spotpear, you (or Claude) will spot the changes right away :-)

Hi! I tested it this morning, and it's really cool. I've added it to the repo!

Funny coincidence, I actually started watching the series again just a few weeks ago. I used to watch it as a kid and really liked it, so I've started a rewatch from the very first seasons. The old sound effects absolutely crack me up when you hear them with modern ears 😂, but I have to say, the show was seriously ahead of its time!

I've still got a ton of episodes to catch up on.

I am big Star Trek fan myself, as you might have figured!
All series are really great, except for Discovery, I just couldn't get used to that!
But Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy are really great!
Too bad the first is almost coming to an end and the latter has been cancelled after only two seasons :-(

But well, it you just started from TOS, you'll have plenty to watch!
Lower Decks is also really, really great - but don't watch that until you're done with TOS, TNS, DS9 and VOY - otherwise you won't get many of the references and it'll be a lot less fun.

And when you're done, you also have to watch The Orville. The first season is bit of a comedy and sometimes the jokes are 'too much', but the latter seasons are a whole lot better. It's definitely worth watching as well!

One quick question about the Spotpears: I have also opened an issue about it, but I just wanted to know real quick: do you have SIP Calls working between them with decent audio quality? I can understand what the other person is trying to say, but nothing more than that, It's almost unintelligible. Just wondering if that's just the way the Spotpears are, or if there something I can do about it. I've spent many, many hours on it but I can't get it right. Assist, announcements etc are working fine (except I cannot get the wake sound / I'm listening to work either) so the mics and speakers themselves are fine. If you also got poor audio quality in calls, I'll just stop fiddeling with them in regards to SIP calls :-)

Hi, I have to be honest, I only use one Spotpear board myself.

When I need to test ESP-to-ESP calls, I usually pair the Spotpear with a Waveshare S3 Audio board, a Waveshare P4, or a standard ESP32-S3 with an I2S microphone and speaker.

And yes, the microphone quality on the Spotpear is not exactly great. At first I thought it was a software issue and I went crazy trying to fix it because I could hear some cyclic background interference. I eventually discovered that it was actually caused by the board's own integrated Wi-Fi antenna interfering with the audio circuitry. That said, when I combine it with noise suppression, the result is actually not bad.

Among all the ESP boards I have tested, the cleanest microphone audio I get is from this Waveshare S3 Audio board:

It has two microphones, and with the AFE backend it gives me really clean audio. The Spotpear is definitely worse in terms of microphone quality.

In any case, I have just released a new version. I had also noticed some pacing issues during direct ESP-to-ESP calls, and I found a latent bug caused by a mismatch in the timing between audio packets being delivered by VoIP Stack and the speaker playback cadence. That issue should now be fixed.

Just this morning I tested:

• Spotpear -> Home Assistant
• Spotpear -> Waveshare S3
• Spotpear -> Waveshare P4

At the moment I am not seeing any additional problems. The audio is reasonably clean and easy to understand, both with the new VoIP-only profile using OPUS and with the full profile using PCM.

For the full profile I was not able to achieve a sufficiently stable OPUS configuration. With all the other components running at the same time, the additional encoding and decoding load can completely starve the device, exhaust the heap, or eventually crash it. For that reason, the full profile still uses PCM.

The direct-call issues related to codec negotiation and timing mismatches should also be resolved now. I have tested ESP-to-ESP calls again and the devices are able to call each other without problems.

There is also now a fallback mechanism for incompatible direct-call configurations. For example, if one ESP is using OPUS and the other PCM, or if there is an incompatible mismatch in timing, sample rate, codec configuration, or similar parameters, the ESP will use Home Assistant as a transcoding fallback, provided Home Assistant is present in the phonebook. VoIP Stack for Home Assistant adds it automatically, so normally there is nothing special to configure.

I would strongly recommend recompiling from the latest version I released today. I think it should work considerably better for you.

For safety, I would also suggest starting again from the YAML currently available in main. Reapply your custom changes afterwards if necessary, but I would do it incrementally.

First test the stock full YAML from main and check whether it solves the issues you are seeing. If it does, start adding your modifications and customizations back one at a time. That should make it much easier to identify any conflict or configuration combination that I may not have anticipated.
