With napari/napari.github.io#432 we don't do unversioned, so we should be able to revert #827 to help prevent issues like #862 where a syntax error in the json is merged, because the live deployed version is used and then a PR fixing it breaks.

I see what you mean. Personally I would not revert it, I think using the absolute URL is usually the best approach. Maybe we just need to document the fact that we are always reading from the absolute, deployed URL - but that is the standard (see https://pydata-sphinx-theme.readthedocs.io/en/stable/user_guide/version-dropdown.html#configure-switcher-json-url):

The JSON file needs to be at a stable, persistent, fully-resolved URL (i.e., not specified as a path relative to the sphinx root of the current doc build).
