How do you init a project by loading up a pre-existing codebase?

It kept loading up empty dir with UUID instead of the selected codebase. Since the app doesnt support version control at all, it makes going back & forth between the "design" and the actual project im working on a huge hassle.. big waste of time.
Really what is the difference between linking local code & choosing work directory folder?
