Keybinding to move a window to a new workspace

Sometimes I just find myself going to the overview and dragging the window in focus, in between the current workspace and neighbouring workspace.

Graphically, this creates a new workspace in between them and moves the current window to that.

It would great to simply have a keybinding that can do this.

To the best of my knowledge the keybindings I found move window to neighbouring workspaces or move workspaces around. Am I missing this exact feature somewhere deep in the docs?

niri has the move-window-to-workspace action. You can view all available actions via niri msg action --help

That would just append the window to the target workspace, the OP is looking for a way to create a workspace between existing workspaces.

There's no single command for this but it is possible using the IPC, see a related example in #2680.
Here's an example script for moving a window into a new workspace below the current one:

You can do the same sort of thing going up a workspace by just using CURR_WSPACE in place of DOWN_WSPACE.

Unfortunately, I don’t think we can.
But on the other hand, we can do this, which creates shortcuts to move the active window down/up (without creating a new workspace if one already exists...):

Mod+Ctrl+U         { move-column-to-workspace-down; }
Mod+Ctrl+I         { move-column-to-workspace-up; }
