The handover README starts from an audit of my own Claude Code usage: 19 sessions and 1,840 requests over five weeks (23 August to 30 September 2026). At API list prices, 61% of the weight was cache re-writes, and 42 of the 55 full re-writes of a 400K to 700K context came from going back to a chat after a break of 55 minutes or more. That is why handover keeps sessions short and lets the next one pick up from a handover file.
One person's numbers prove little, so I would like to see yours. The two audit scripts run on your machine, read only your local transcripts, need Node 18 or newer and nothing else, cost no tokens and send nothing anywhere:
They read ~/.claude/projects, or $CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR/projects when you set it; --root <folder> reads another folder.
If you post, these are the numbers that help most, rounded as you like and with nothing from your prompts:
the period, and the number of sessions and requests
the share of the weight from cache re-writes, and from output
how many full re-writes there were, and how many came after a break of an hour or so
whether your chats are long-lived or one task each
Numbers lower than mine are as useful as higher ones: they show where the advice does not apply. I wrote handover and these scripts, so read the framing with that in mind.
