Gen 1: borken state

Hi,

I got a gen 1 reader used, and after i factory reset it, i cannot update the device.
(I suspect their api changed or something)

Dose anyone have the boot 1 running normally, that i can get some software from?
So i can overwrite mine?

I tried to reach out to their costumer service, but they would't help me, as I got it used
I have a storytel account, with a active subscription

Hi!

I got an email from Storytel in January to update my gen 1 device before Feb 22 or else it would stop working and it would not be possible to update it. I assume only active subscribers got this. I did the update and everything is working fine after Feb 22. The updated didn't touch the boot partition so the device was still unlocked, no need for a new patched boot partition.

Anyways, you should be able to get the bootstrap APK from their update URL using a computer. The update URL is https://api.storytel.net/reader-updates/devices/padda/updates for the gen 1 (aka paddan) device. Here's what it currently returns:

I believe the system partition is mounted read-only by default so if you want to replace the APK I think you need to remount it first. You should be able to do that via adb.

I did try to install the apk with adb, but that didn't work. I needed to install the whole firmware update.

I am happy to hear that you managed to recover your reader! Just one thought, did you really have to patch the boot partition for this to work? Did you try adb sideload with the unpatched boot partition first? What happened?

Maybe not actually.

For me adb didn't work out of the box, so had to enable it. That's what I use to write to boot with. Maybe there was another way🤔 I never tried going back to the original boot image, and sideload it with adb

I did just sideload the firmware in step 3 🤠

When I try to download the file, I get an error message(see bellow), Not Sure if I'm doing something wrong or if something changed on the other side.

The URL of the fw_padda***.zip file is that last one. I assume it changes every now and so you are better off first getting the JSON using curl and then extracting the current URL from that.

I did just sideload the firmware in step 3 and now the Storytel Reader working again. Thanks for sharing FW_Padda.zip file!

@ntherning Thank you for your help, I just did the sideload thing and now my Storytel Reader (Gen 1) is working again.

Very pleased to hear that it is working now for you guys! Could you please just confirm whether it worked to just adb sideload the firmware zip file without patching the boot partition like @AndersSpringborg did? I'm thinking I might update the README.md with the instructions but I cannot verify whether the sideloading works with the unpatched boot partition since my device is already updated.
