The good news is, the tooling around support for myst-markdown notebooks has advanced quite a bit since this was written!

This is still possible to do, but AIUI these days the recommended pattern would be to use jupyter lab with the jupyterlab_myst extension. This gives jupyter lab users the UX they expect when working with notebooks, while maintaining the myst-markdown source under-the-hood. This PR points users to this pattern in the few places where the pairing notebook was mentioned.

As the ecosystem continues to evolve, hopefully one day myst-markdown notebooks will be natively supported and there will be no need to even mention extensions! 😄

Quite right, it's time to move away from the pairing hackery.
