Thanks Jef — most of this already exists, and the part that doesn't is worth an issue. What's there today (since 0.9.12): type What isn't there: a format choice. The date follows the viewer's locale — someone in the US sees M/D/YY, someone in France sees DD/MM/YYYY — which is deliberate for a deck that might be shown to different audiences, but it means you can't pin a format.
