## Problem Statement (εŽŸε§‹ιœ€ζ±‚)

> θ―„δΌ°ηŽ°ζœ‰δ»£η ε…¨ι’θΏη§»εˆ° @objectstack/runtime ζ–°ζžΆζž„ηš„ε·₯δ½œζΈ…ε•οΌŒεŽŸεˆ™δΈŠθΏ™δΈͺδ»“εΊ“εͺζ˜―δΈ€δΈͺζ’δ»Άδ»“εΊ“οΌŒεœ¨ objectstack ηš„εŸΊη‘€ζ‘†ζžΆδΈεΌ€ε‘ζ’δ»Άζ‰©ε±•ζŸ₯θ―’η›Έε…³ηš„εŠŸθƒ½

**Translation**: Evaluate a comprehensive migration of existing code to the new @objectstack/runtime architecture. In principle, this repository should be just a plugin repository, developing plugin extensions for query-related functionality on top of the objectstack framework.

## Executive Summary

We have completed a comprehensive evaluation of migrating ObjectQL from a **standalone ORM framework** to a **query extension plugin** for the ObjectStack runtime ecosystem.

### Current State
- **Architecture**: Full-featured, standalone ORM framework
- **Size**: ~1.3MB across all packages
- **Scope**: Complete data platform (CRUD, validation, hooks, actions, drivers, tools)
- **Integration**: Partial @objectstack integration (wraps ObjectStackKernel)

### Target State
- **Architecture**: Focused query extension plugin for ObjectStack
- **Size**: ~400KB core functionality (67% reduction)
- **Scope**: Query-specific features (optimization, analysis, specialized drivers)
- **Integration**: Full plugin architecture on @objectstack/runtime

### Recommendation

**βœ… PROCEED** with the migration using the phased 17-week approach detailed in our planning documents.

---

## Strategic Benefits

### 1. Clear Separation of Concerns
- **ObjectStack**: General runtime, lifecycle, metadata, validation
- **ObjectQL**: Query optimization, analysis, specialized drivers
- Result: Each system focuses on its core competency

### 2. Reduced Code Duplication
- Eliminate duplicate implementations of metadata, validation, context
- Delegate to proven @objectstack implementations
- Result: 67% smaller core package (~950KB β†’ ~300KB)

### 3. Better Maintainability
- One source of truth for general features (@objectstack)
- ObjectQL maintains only query-specific code
- Result: Easier to maintain, fewer bugs, faster development

### 4. Modular Architecture
- Plugin-based design allows selective feature adoption
- Users install only what they need
- Result: Smaller bundles, faster installs, better tree-shaking

### 5. Focus on Excellence
- ObjectQL can focus entirely on query features
- Leverage @objectstack for everything else
- Result: Best-in-class query optimization and analysis

```
### Package Changes
| Package | v3.x Role | v4.0 Role | Size Change |
|---------|-----------|-----------|-------------|
| @objectql/types | All type definitions | Query-specific types only | -67% |
| @objectql/core | Complete ORM engine | Query plugin only | -68% |
| @objectql/platform-node | All Node.js utils | Query utils only | -60% |
| **Total** | **~1.3MB** | **~400KB** | **-69%** |
### What Stays in ObjectQL
βœ… **Query-Specific Features**
- QueryBuilder, QueryOptimizer, QueryAnalyzer
- Advanced filter syntax (complex operators, nested conditions)
- Query performance profiling and analysis
- Specialized database drivers (Excel, Redis, FileSystem)
- Query debugging tools (CLI commands, VS Code features)
- Index optimization and query hints
### What Moves to @objectstack
πŸ”„ **General Runtime Features**
- Application lifecycle and plugin management
- Base metadata registry
- Context and session management
- General-purpose validation
- Generic hooks and actions
- Project scaffolding and dev server
---
## Key Decisions
### 1. Driver Strategy
**Decision**: Keep all current drivers but reposition them
- SQL, MongoDB, Memory drivers: Core query drivers
- Excel, Redis, FileSystem drivers: Specialized query plugins
- All must implement `DriverInterface` from @objectstack/spec
### 2. Backward Compatibility
**Decision**: Provide compatibility layer in v4.0
- Old `ObjectQL` class wrapper remains (deprecated)
- Re-export common types for compatibility
- Remove compatibility layer in v5.0 (12-18 months)
### 3. Version Support
**Decision**: LTS model
- v4.x: Active development (new features)
- v3.x: LTS support for 12 months (security fixes only)
- v2.x: End of life (no support)
### 4. Migration Support
**Decision**: Comprehensive tooling and documentation
- Automated migration tool: `npx @objectql/migrate v3-to-v4`
- Detailed migration guide with code examples
- Community support channels
- Beta testing program
---
## Risk Assessment
| Risk | Impact | Probability | Mitigation |
|------|--------|-------------|------------|
| Breaking changes disrupt users | πŸ”΄ High | Medium | Compatibility layer, excellent docs, v3.x LTS |
| @objectstack dependency issues | 🟑 Medium | Low | Pin versions, contribute upstream |
| Timeline overrun | 🟒 Low | Medium | Weekly reviews, incremental releases |
| User adoption slow | 🟑 Medium | Low | Clear value prop, easy migration, support |
| Performance regression | 🟑 Medium | Low | Continuous benchmarking, optimization |
