Bring back bare mode/minimal install request.

As the title suggests, please bring back bare mode. I understand the philosophy behind the 'omakase' mentality and while I do agree with it, especially to help bring more people to the Linux/arch ecosystem, you run the risk of having too much bloat. Packages are easy to uninstall, sure, but the dependencies required for said packages are what I am concerned about. Don't forget, the reason people are migrating over from other distros/windows is due to (in some part) the bloat that make them up. The core functionality of omarchy is fantastic but do we really need LibreOffice? Zoom? Spotify? Especially when there are other alternatives.

I love this project and want to continue to see it succeed and grow but with this 2.0 release I am concerned for its future.

I agree.

As the Omarchy is adopted by thousands (not only Basecamp), each will have their own apps preferences. "Defaults matter" as DHH would say.

Having the possibility of opt out apps via TUI as part of the ISO installation would be great.

One thing that lead me towards Arch a couple years ago was the ability to just build my own system from scratch in a way. I would love to have an omarchy bare minimal system with just the core arch and the amazing GUI setup that omarchy brings with the themes, menu system and maybe just neovim and chromium.

An arch based linux distro in 10 min with amazing GUI and no bloat would be the dream.

I personally agree I think a TUI on install with a checklist would be a simple answer but dhh has commented on YouTube and other threads that that is completely counter to the core Omakase principle behind Omachy so its safe to say it won't happen.

About Omakase principle. In Omakase restaurants you can tell the chef you are vegetarian and they won't serve you meat - you cannot do the same in Omarchy.

I started this discuss in an earlier topic as well: Bare installation still has "bloatware".
All I got was "just download arch and install hyprland by yourself".

In my opinion it is absolutely counterproductive to the distribution of Omarchy to install a lot of packages which 90% of the average users will never use. At the end it will be just a bunch of bloatware...

I don’t agree. I used other applications on my previous distribution, but thanks to Omarchy I tried something new and decided to stick with it. For example, Obsidian, Pinta, Typora, and so on.

I don't agree with a bare mode either, It's DHH's thing and he include what he pleases.

However, an option to opt out apps would be great instead of going manually to remove and having them removed once the OS installed. Specially when doing yay -R typora (e.g.) leaves breadcrumbs all over the system.

I second this. This would not only bring more people to Linux, but also help other people adapt to the idea that "Your computer is your computer, and you can configure it however you want without companies pushing things in your face"

Deinstall takes max 5mins. Omarchy is a Distro geared towards devs. Removing the couple of bundled apps is honestly no big deal.

Im greatful of the setup lazygit, lazydocker etc.

The Webapps can even be removed as a multiselect.

I agree with most people in the comment section! The allure of linux to most people is the non bloated nature
there should be, atleast when installing an option to deselect the apps you do not want and that would make sure that all the associated dependencies are also not installed!

as per the README in the omarchy-cleaner

safely removes your choices. It can also clean up associated keyboard shortcuts and provides visual feedback on completion status

But I wouldn't be certain if it only removes, say package X or it also removes A,B,C that were installed just to make sure X functions properly.

after testing, the cleaner does attempt to remove dependencies and reverts with an error if it fails to get rid of the dependencies (I experienced this when trying to get rid of libreoffice)

yup who still use spotify anyway. I use youtube music on browser. music player doesnt need any OS api so web version is enough

Bare mode is not coming back. We've made it super easy to uninstall anything you don't want with multi-select of both packages and web apps. So you can always substitute with whatever you like. But Omakase is literally in the name: https://learn.omacom.io/3/omacom/81/doctrine#defaults-over-decisions
