Summary

  • Extract the duplicated result-processing loop from all ~30 dimensional validators into two reusable methods in BaseTestValidator:
    • _process_dimension_rows() — common loop: build metrics → evaluate → create result
    • _build_dimension_metric_values() — hook for custom metric extraction (None-skipping, extra keys), overridden by SQA validators that need it

Previously the number of top dimension values was hardcoded to 5
(DEFAULT_TOP_DIMENSIONS). This adds a topDimensions field to the
test case schema so users can control how many dimension values
are shown individually before the rest are grouped as "Others".

🔍 CI failure analysis for 7e9e9ab: SonarCloud still fails due to >10% code duplication on new code. Other CI failures (network timeouts, unrelated Oracle test, Playwright flakiness) are unrelated to this PR's changes.

Issue

Six CI failures observed across runs of this PR — none except the SonarCloud quality gate are related to the dimensional validator refactoring changes.


1. [open-metadata-ingestion] SonarCloud Code Analysis — Quality Gate Failed

Root Cause: SonarCloud reports 16.4% duplication on new code, exceeding the required threshold of ≤ 10%.

The PR extracts shared loops (_process_dimension_rows / _build_dimension_metric_values) to reduce duplication across ~30 dimensional validators. However, SonarCloud is still detecting duplicate code patterns in the modified files that exceed the 10% threshold. Further deduplication may be needed to pass this check.


2. py-combine-coverage — Missing Integration Coverage Artifacts

Root Cause: The "Prepare coverage files" step failed with exit code 1 immediately after printing its environment. The job only successfully downloaded the coverage-unit artifact — no coverage-integration-* artifacts were available. This is a downstream failure: integration tests did not produce coverage artifacts because they failed due to a Docker network timeout (see item 3).

Fix: Retry the integration test jobs — once they succeed and publish coverage artifacts, the combine job should pass.


3. Integration Tests (shard-2, 3.10) — Docker Network Timeout

Root Cause: The Docker build for the ingestion container failed at stage 6/27 with a network timeout:

curl: (28) Failed to connect to public.dhe.ibm.com port 443 after 135246 ms: Couldn't connect to server

No integration tests ran at all. This is a transient infrastructure/network issue unrelated to this PR's code changes.

Fix: Retry the job — transient network timeouts typically resolve on re-run.


4. py-run-tests (3.10) — Unrelated Oracle Unit Test Failure

Root Cause: test_yield_stored_procedure in ingestion/tests/unit/topology/database/test_oracle.py:236 fails with a schema mismatch — the test fixture returns BigQuery schema names instead of Oracle schema names. This is a pre-existing test data issue unrelated to this PR.


5 & 6. playwright-ci-postgresql (5, 6) — Infrastructure Flakiness

Multiple Playwright failures including:

  • Browser context crashes / timeouts in EntityDataSteward.spec.ts
  • Timeout finding lineage node with forward slash in FQN in Lineage.spec.ts:466 (pre-existing special character handling issue)
  • TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined in SearchIndexClass.ts:169 for Spreadsheet entity type
  • Browser context closures in Users.spec.ts, ServiceEntity.spec.ts, Tag.spec.ts, Glossary.spec.ts

None of these failures touch code modified by this PR.
