cyberinfrastructure working group #114

Description

@alee

Omnibus issue for cyberinfrastructure tooling and support in service of the OMF mission.

The Cyberinfrastructure Working Group serves to identify or develop tools and processes which serve to lower the technical barriers towards adoption of the standards developed by the Standards Working Group. The Cyberinfrastructure Working Group also identifies ways to best deploy these tools and sufficient documentation to enable their use to modeling scientists. This Working Group also coordinates the development and management of the Open Modeling Foundation Science Gateway. The Cyberinfrastructure Working Group may be assisted by Open Modeling Foundation technical staff in its mission. Open Modeling Foundation technical staff will be defacto members of the Cyberinfrastructure Working Group.

The OMF is a Science Gateway only insofar as it federates access to other science gateways: Keep It Simple

  1. standards adoption and/or advancement for each standards category: Accessibility, Documentation, Interoperability, Reproducibility
  2. coordinating efforts on interoperability (BMI/CMI), containerization, education and outreach, etc
  3. the OMF website itself (see also One site or two #108)
  4. serve as a trusted source that provides a "seal of approval" for other CI services and provide actionable / concrete guidance to improve in relevant areas
  5. consider providing curation / member-only services as incentives for membership in addition to public goods that are developed for the broader community

Things to consider to reduce friction or otherwise incentivize adoption:

  • template repositories with common project layouts for different modeling frameworks or platforms
  • CLI tools to interactively build or augment these repositories
  • github apps or actions that augment existing codebases with further-curatable pull requests
  • consider MINT project as a metadata service layer to aid in Accessibility (discoverability) currently a tedious process to register the data (is this an area for us to contribute)

carpentries style lessons / workshops, github apps / actions that augment existing codebases through a transparent pull request style process
