Mega thread to share screenshots and updates regarding the decompilation/features implementation. Everything in this thread is WIP/incomplete (and only shared to provide regular updates)

Heightmaps are finally fixed! (turned out to be a one line fix; caused by some bad pointer arithmetic generated by Ghidra...):

I've also finally found/fixed a similar bug with Flash rendering (fixing the alpha masking issue with Sandbox + fixing a long time bug with CarShowcase having corrupted vertices from time to time):

I finally took the time to finish adding MSAA support to the Vulkan backend. Supports up to x4 (like the original); maybe in the future we could extend up to x8? Considering how cheap the game is to run, I was also considering adding support for screen percentage > 100% (to achieve some kind of SSAA).

Another quality of life: I've moved the asset extraction logic from the command line tool to a static library that the main client links to. This way, you don't need to run the asset extractor anymore (the client will do it for you on your first run). It's a little bit clunky at the moment (checks if the shader folder exists in your working directory); so it will most likely require some improvement later on.

Regarding world rendering, some new things:

• I've added a "world viewer" game mode (-worldviewer when running the game via command line). Gives you a free cam and the whole map to explore
• Started adding impostors decomp logic (still incomplete; lighting is slightly off/dark as seen on the first screenshot)
• Also decompiled and implemented the logic for sectors local geometry (for roads, landmarks like those lighthouses and water planes (non-ocean)). Water/waterfall shading is currently broken and incomplete (UVA parsing for world geometry is not implemented so waterfalls look static) (second screenshot)

I'll try to merge back the changes back to main at some point (to catch up with all the MSVC compiler warnings I'll have to deal with) so that people can play around with one of the CI binary

• Fixed .uva animations in World (fixes ocean foam; waterfalls; secret island teleporter; etc.)

• Fixed heightmap stitching between sectors and Areas

• Fixed missing ambient contribution for impostors (they don't look darker than the regular game anymore)

• Proper HDRI/SDR support (HDRI is still incomplete; the overblown bloom from the original game is still missing)
• The world viewer has been merged in main. From now on, the prebuilt binaries (from the CI) will include it (it is also now the default gamemode; you can still jump back to car showcase on launch with -carshowcase or by using the debug menu)

The model is most likley not the right one (several anims look corrupted), but I am not sure if the right model still exists in the files (the props like the tennis racket and ball don't exist too). I guess we'll see what's what once life set entities are implemented.

The walk animation for pedestrians is also goofy (but that might be because the framerate for animation playback is wrong lol).

Only spot exteriors (and low poly interiors) are implemented/rendering right now. The whole interior logic for home/garage/dealership is still unimplemented

More render bug fixes (for skinned PMIs (guardrails), area impostors (Waikiki buildings)); some groundwork for particles rendering (still have some work/debug to do to fix emitter placement with streaming).

And as a bonus, some super-duper early physics test (only heightmap collisions are implemented; and the vehicle physics logic is extremely primitive/barebones for now):

heightmap collision is verry nice, without fps drop. Jolt is a good choice ! Can't wait to see more life on the map, traffic vehicles, peds and cinematic airplanes

Proper collision support for .pmi (static + dynamic), local sector geometry and road (hmap->road transition is still a bit rough/worse than the original game):

Vehicle physics is still WIP (and will take time, as the physics logic seems to be based on Havok built-in vehicle).

Is it possible to improve the throttle response? You need to use around 50% of the throttle to prevent a car from stalling or to control drifting; you should use the throttle like an on/off switch, as torque is only useful at very high throttle percentages.

You have to press the accelerator to about 80%, and above that point, the torque becomes useful. The torque margin is really small.

I guess that's something we could expose (perhaps in Physics.ini and in the debug menu to allow tuning at runtime). I guess it would be good to collect a list of variables that should be data driven/tunable (so that people can tweak the physics without having to recompile the game locally)

Vehicle camera, player input and HUD progress:

Implemented envmap capture (used by rear view mirrors/dynamic environment reflections):

Still working on vehicle physics (made more RE progress, fixed several drivetrain simulation bugs).

More rendering fixes (missing mipchain refresh for ocean normal map; proper brightpass for HDRI crazy bloom; UV transform logic for particle emitters; proper UVA animation looping (removing the harsh cut during loop); shadows and LOD fixes); implemented GPS minimap rendering (only missing road wires, spots and players). Further progressed on the physics side (fixed instance collision primitives transform; more progress regarding vehicle physics RE (also found some interesting mechanics that are unused in the final game, like brakes temp fade)).

Skydome UV fix
A bug from the og game (that was never fixed by anyone to my surprise), resulting in visible color banding.

Freeride HUD
Escape/pause menu implemented; proper timeout for the ingame menu (radio/freeride players/driving aids/etc.).

Vehicle Audio
Groundwork for audio (SDL3 bindings, audio mixing/streaming/loading, etc.) and vehicle audio have been implemented. World audio/GSAmbiance is still unimplemented.

MngEnvMap wrap-up + enhancements
Remaining draw logic implemented + added extra option to override draw distance/num of impostors drawn for the envmap capture (this will remain optional gfx option).

GSPhysicsFX
Implemented collision logic for vehicles (Jolt logic; audio and particles).

More progress (landed many fixes like unexepected rigid body wake, missing gravity hacks for regular mode (the body slam the non-hardcore mode)).
Additionally, hardcore mode is now fully implemented (including the optional G-Meter):

Implemented the Boat system. Boat entities now spawn in world (follow their pre defined path; play audio; etc.):

Ambiance/Details
Fully implemented GSDetails/GSAmbiance (both systems are tightly tied together). Unlocks world details (birds, leaf particles, papers) as well as audio ambiance.

Aircraft
Fully implemented GSAircraft (+all entities).

Flash Localization
Implemented flash localization. Currently defaults to english (as the forced FreeRide game mode bypasses savegame/settings loading)

Water planar reflections
Finished reflection support for water (ocean/lake/river); adding impostors/area/sector geometry support.

Avatar
Fully implemented avatar support. Note that the whole animation subsystem is still stubbed. As a result, the local player avatar driver is stuck in A pose.

MngChat
Implemented for freeride game mode completeness (not really useful for now since online is still fully stubbed). Will be used for fancy MoTD on game boot :)

Bug fixes
Multiple streaming/render/physics bugs have been fixed. One nasty heightmap LOD bug took me a while to debug (fun fact: the original game heightmap LOD selection breaks whenever you toggle the map in freeride, forcing the highest LOD quality until the player enters a world spot).

I got a little side tracked by GMLogin/GMLiving (what I thought would take me a day to implement took severals).

WIP mod manager. The manager relies on the built-in DLC logic (using .big/.map + a .xml manifest to define the content). The manifest logic has been extended so that a mod can extend the database in a non-destructive way (what it means: a mod can either replace an existing vehicle or add a new one).

Some progress with GMLiving. Cinematics play (with bugs), only "Return to FreeRide" is support (garage/dressing is still unimplemented).

I can't run the Akella disc (Russian CD 1.66A).

Car color swap
Implemented the logic to retrieve car paints/interiors/rims from the database; as well as render logic to update materials. Currently unavailable outside the debug menu (this is groundwork for dealerships and car paint shops).

Interior Walk Mode
Work in progress first person mode (TDU2 style) for interior scenes (such as house/garage/dealership). Still WIP (interactions are still stubbed).

Player stats display
Implemented the logic to display level/money/coupons, as well as active vehicle stats.

GMFreeride spot detection
Implemented logic to detect when the player is close to a world spot/race/mission (enter is still stubbed).

Cinematics/intro cutscene
Further progress for cutscene support. House intro/outro are almost matching the original game.

House interiors looks and feels clean. I wonder if that Alfa in the background of the first interior photo is actual 3D model that has collision?
Absolutely wonderful work.

The Alfa in the background is a regular vehicle being instanced. The vehicle physics is paused/keyframed in GMLiving but collision should still work.

GMBoatTour (sort of)
Implement boat tour. This is as close as we can get, as unfortunately the bank for this game mode does not exist in the final game. OpenTDU uses boat paths used by AI boats as a replacement.

Game mode is now fully implemented (included support for interior banks, thanks to @PspLover-dev).
