Hi Bitwarden team! 👋
I’d like to propose adding support for centrally managed settings and policies to the Bitwarden Desktop application, similar to what is already possible with the browser extension.
I’m currently deploying Bitwarden Desktop in an enterprise environment using centralized software deployment, and I think having a supported way to configure and manage certain client settings would be very useful for administrators.
Initial use case: Self-hosted server URL
A good starting point would be the ability to configure the self-hosted server URL through a Windows Group Policy / registry key, without having to modify the application’s data.json file.
Ideally, administrators could also optionally prevent users from changing the configured server URL.
Possible future use cases
Beyond the server URL, I’m also interested in whether Bitwarden would be open to supporting additional managed desktop settings in the future, for example:
The idea would not be to introduce a full policy system immediately, but rather to establish an extensible mechanism that could support additional settings over time.
UI visibility settings would primarily be intended to simplify the interface, not to replace server-side permissions or security enforcement.
Implementation
I noticed that the codebase already contains a ManagedSettingsService infrastructure, and that managed environment settings are being worked on for the browser extension (e.g. #23380).
It might make sense to build on this existing infrastructure instead of introducing a completely separate configuration mechanism.
For Windows, registry-based policies under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Bitwarden could be one possible approach, with support for other platforms potentially following later.
Questions for the Bitwarden team
I’d be happy to work on an implementation, but wanted to check whether this direction aligns with Bitwarden’s plans and expectations before starting.
Thanks! 🙂
