Private repo storage limit in the free for organisations tier? #155188

Packages are compiled/built assets tied to the repository. For example, if you have a node project you can setup a workflow to build the project and create an artifact that can be downloaded from GitHub packages. Another use case would be building docker containers from code in the repository and making that container available on GitHub. If you have not set that up in build system, and none of your repositories have anything listed in the packages area, then the 500mb limit is not relevant to you (afaik). |

I understand that both personal and organisation tiers include unlimited repos. What I do not understand is what the "500MB packages storage" refers to. Is this different to the size limit of repositories? What is allowed in terms of repo sizes in each plan?
Context: I have approx 25 repos on Bitbucket on the free plan, which weigh in at 1.5GB and they have reduced the allowed capacity to 1GB. I'm now looking at my options.
