I feel you man 2FA + old phones = pain I think you got 2 obvious options to try: Option A → If you saved any backup codes somewhere, TRY TO FIND THEM (github gives you 10 when enabling 2fa) If none of those work, your best shot is to go through github's account recovery appeal next: They'll tell you that you need to prove ownership, which they usually do through: IP history, email confirmations, etc ... it took around ~1–2 weeks for me Let me know if you want a template for that appeal msg, will help you with this brother until you get your account back, we can try sending legal letters and messaging specific support team members. Stay in touch pls |

Hi @yasir-ai, Really appreciate you taking the time to respond — you're absolutely right, 2FA + phone loss is a recipe for frustration. I’ve already checked both options: No recovery codes unfortunately. I’ve searched through all password managers, cloud storage, and devices — nothing found. The /settings/admin page doesn’t help either since I can’t get past the 2FA challenge to log in. I did submit an account recovery request via the official form (https://support.github.com/request/account-recovery), and the response I got was the generic policy one: GitHub Support can't assist without a valid 2FA method or recovery code. No follow-up. Just silence since April. If you’re willing to share a template for the appeal message — I’d really appreciate that. Also open to trying legal routes or directly contacting a human within GitHub. |

Hi everyone,
I'm reaching out here out of frustration and urgency, as I've exhausted all available options trying to recover access to my GitHub account (talha433).
I’ve enabled two-factor authentication (2FA) using only Microsoft Authenticator. Unfortunately, I no longer have access to that device and, critically, GitHub does not offer any fallback options such as SMS, email codes, or identity verification.
Here’s where I stand:
I know my password — it's correct.
GitHub does not send 2FA codes to my email or phone.
No backup recovery codes are available. I was never prompted to download them or may have missed the chance.
I submitted a support ticket (#3328442) weeks ago. Aside from an automated reply, I’ve received no meaningful response or resolution.
GitHub does not provide any method to verify identity or ownership of the account — no ID checks, no verification through commit history, billing info, or linked email addresses.
The support response I received stated that if I don’t have the recovery codes or a valid 2FA method, there is nothing they can do. This essentially means I'm permanently locked out of my own account, despite knowing the correct credentials and having a long activity history tied to it.
I've tried:
Resetting the password (it works, but login still fails at the 2FA step)
Checking for old SSH keys, personal access tokens, or recovery codes
Waiting for any manual review from GitHub Support — still nothing
This situation is incredibly frustrating. A single lost phone has resulted in complete loss of access to years of work. I understand the need for strict security, but there must be a more reasonable fallback process — especially when a user can provide valid credentials and evidence of account ownership.
Has anyone successfully recovered access under similar conditions?
Or is there any known way to escalate the issue for actual human review?
Thanks for reading — I appreciate any help or guidance the community can offer.
Best,
Muhammad Talha Siddiqui
