Connecting via Shopify Admin

In your Shopify Admin:

1. Online Store → Themes
2. Click Add theme → Connect from GitHub
3. Authenticate with GitHub (OAuth flow) — grant access to the repo(s) containing your theme.
4. Pick the repo and branch you want Shopify to track.

Shopify will now:

• Pull the branch into a new unpublished theme in your store
• Auto-deploy updates whenever you push to that branch

I looked at your repo https://github.com/Firelights99/firelightsygo/

Your folder structure looks perfect inside the shopify/ directory — you have all the required theme folders (layout/, templates/, sections/, snippets/, assets/, config/, and locales/) along with the crucial settings_schema.json in config/.

However, Shopify’s GitHub theme integration expects those folders to be at the root of the branch, not nested inside another folder like shopify/.

In other words, your branch’s root directory should directly contain:

layout/
templates/
sections/
snippets/
assets/
config/
locales/

not

shopify/
layout/
templates/
...

I also think you used AI and mixed up a lot of code together. You got multiple different code files in your repo, that seem to be completely mixed together. Shopify does not allow that.

You need to create a new GitHub repository containing only your Shopify theme files — that means just the folders like layout/, templates/, sections/, snippets/, assets/, config/, locales/ and the essential theme files like config/settings_schema.json, all at the root level.

You cannot simply add your entire codebase or a nested folder and expect Shopify’s GitHub integration to work. Shopify requires a clean repo or branch where the theme files live at the root, without extra backend code, docs, or unrelated files mixed in.

So the right workflow is:

Extract the Shopify theme files from your big repo (from the shopify/ folder)

Push those files into a new, dedicated GitHub repo — theme files at root

Connect that new repo and branch to Shopify via the GitHub integration

This is the only way Shopify will recognize your theme and deploy it correctly. Mixing your full codebase or nesting the theme inside a folder will always fail with “branch isn’t a valid theme.”

I just did this last week

1. In your store: Online Store → Themes
2. Click Add theme → Connect from GitHub
3. Authorize GitHub
4. Select repo Firelights99/firelights-theme, branch main
5. Shopify creates an unpublished theme and will auto-deploy on each push

Your new repo’s root should contain only these theme folders/files:

/assets
/config
/layout
/locales
/sections
/snippets
/templates
config/settings_schema.json   ← must exist & be valid JSON

Make sure the theme folders aren’t at the root → make sure there’s no extra nesting.
