GitHub's location verification uses a combination of GPS data and IP geolocation. The issue is that IP geolocation is often inaccurate, especially in China where:

  • University networks may route traffic through regional or national ISPs whose geolocation data doesn't map cleanly to the physical campus location.
  • VPN usage (even institutional VPNs) can show an entirely different location.
  • Geolocation databases may simply have outdated or incorrect data for Sichuan University's IP ranges.

Things to try before reapplying:

  • Try applying via mobile data instead of Wi-Fi
