Application for Student Benefits Denied

My application was rejected with the reason indicating that my location could not be verified as being within a school campus. However, I am currently physically present at Sichuan University, Jiang’an Campus(N30°33', E103°59'), and I am connected to the official campus Wi-Fi network while submitting the appeal and during my original application.

Sometimes the GitHub Student Benefits verification system cannot confirm a campus location even if you are physically on campus. This can happen due to VPN usage, network routing, or IP address location differences.

You could try the following steps:

1. Disable any VPN or proxy before submitting the application.
2. Make sure your GitHub account email is a valid university email if possible.
3. Upload a clear proof of enrollment such as a student ID card or official enrollment document.
4. If the appeal was already submitted, you may need to wait for the GitHub Education team to manually review the request.

If the location verification failed automatically, manual review is usually the best way to resolve it.

GitHub's location verification uses a combination of GPS data and IP geolocation. The issue is that IP geolocation is often inaccurate, especially in China where:

• University networks may route traffic through regional or national ISPs whose geolocation data doesn't map cleanly to the physical campus location.
• VPN usage (even institutional VPNs) can show an entirely different location.
• Geolocation databases may simply have outdated or incorrect data for Sichuan University's IP ranges.

Things to try before reapplying:

• Try applying via mobile data instead of Wi-Fi
