Copilot billing: Using the same credit card for company and personal accounts #190511
-
🏷️ Discussion TypeQuestion 💬 Feature/Topic AreaAccount Related BodyHi. A while ago, I used my personal credit card to grab a 30-day Copilot free trial on my work GitHub account. Now I want to actually pay for a Copilot sub on my personal account, and I plan to use that exact same card. I have two worries before I go through with it: Getting flagged: Will using the same card across two different accounts trigger some kind of anti-fraud bot or get me banned? The free trial thing: When I try to check out on my personal account, it forces me into another 1-month free trial. Since I already used a trial with this card on the work account, is claiming this going to break the ToS? Is there any way to just skip the trial and hand over my money right away to play it safe? Basically, I just want to do this by the book and avoid getting my accounts banned. |

Using the same credit card across multiple GitHub accounts (for example work and personal) is generally not unusual, especially if the accounts are legitimately used for different purposes. In most cases this alone should not trigger any issues, as billing methods are often shared across users or organizations. Regarding the free trial, GitHub may automatically apply trial eligibility at the account level rather than strictly based on the card. If the checkout flow is forcing a trial, it’s usually safe to proceed, but you may want to review the current Copilot terms or contact GitHub Support if you want to be completely certain. If you prefer to avoid confusion, another option could be to wait until the trial period ends and then continue with a paid subscription, or check whether support can manually clarify or adjust the billing setup. |

Using the same card across accounts is generally safe and won’t get you banned. The only issue is that free trials are typically limited per user/payment method, so you might not actually get the trial again, but it won’t violate ToS or cause a ban. |
