The pancake menu icon that shipped alongside the stacked pull requests announcement has been removed following community feedback. Fair enough — a surprise emoji in global navigation with no tooltip or explanation confused a lot of people, and the criticism in #203497 was legitimate.

But I'd like to make the case that removal shouldn't be the end of the story. A lot of us liked the pancake. It was a small, harmless piece of whimsy that made me smile every time I opened the menu, and it was a genuinely clever visual pun for a genuinely great feature launch. The problem was never the pancake itself — it was that it was on by default, unexplained, and unavoidable.

There's an easy resolution that satisfies both camps: make it opt-in.

Proposal: Add a toggle under Settings → Appearance, something like:

Replace the navigation menu icon with a 🥞. Because pull requests stack, and so do pancakes.

Why this works:

1. It resolves the original complaints completely. Every objection in Don't use 🥞(pancakes emoji) as menu icon #203497 — no alt text, no explanation, confusion about whether the icon font was broken — evaporates when the icon change is something you deliberately turned on yourself.
2. There's precedent. The Appearance settings page already lets us customize color modes, themes, and emoji skin tone preference. A cosmetic nav icon toggle fits naturally alongside those. Feature Preview has long been the home for opt-in experiences, too.
3. It costs almost nothing. The asset and the swap logic already exist — they shipped on July 30. This is gating existing code behind a user preference, not building something new.
4. Personality matters. Octocat, Mona, the contribution graph turning into a skyline — small moments of character are part of why people love GitHub rather than merely tolerate it. Killing the pancake entirely, rather than letting fans keep it, feels like the wrong lesson to take from the feedback.

The stacked PRs launch deserved a celebration, and the pancake was a good one — it just needed a consent checkbox. Give us the toggle. Those who want a boring hamburger keep their boring hamburger. The rest of us eat pancakes.
