Hi everyone,

Hello GitHub Education team and community,

I would appreciate some guidance regarding the status of my recently renewed GitHub Education teacher verification and the benefits associated with it.

I have been a verified GitHub Education teacher for several years. My previous verification recently expired, so I submitted a new application as a teacher.

My new application has been shown as Approved for more than five days under my GitHub Education benefits settings. However, the same page still indicates that I am waiting for access to all of my benefits.

There is another issue that makes me unsure whether my renewed verification has been fully applied to my account.

Shortly after my new teacher application was approved, I regained access to GitHub Copilot Pro, which I had previously received as a verified teacher. However, I subsequently lost that access.

I checked my GitHub account directly under Settings → Copilot → Features, and my account currently shows access only to Copilot Free, not Copilot Pro.

Therefore, my current situation is:

• my new teacher verification application is shown as Approved;
• the Education benefits page still says that I am waiting for access to all benefits;
• after the approval, I initially regained Copilot Pro access;
• that Copilot Pro access was subsequently removed; and
• my account currently shows only Copilot Free.

There may also be a relevant detail concerning the email addresses associated with my GitHub account.

Several years ago, my institutional email address was the primary email associated with my GitHub account. Since then, my personal email address has become my primary email, while my institutional email address has remained associated with the same GitHub account.

Around the time my previous teacher verification expired, I received a notification at my current primary email address indicating that my free GitHub access had expired and that I should move to a paid plan. On the other hand, I received GitHub Education-related communication through my institutional email following my new application.

This made me wonder whether the change in my primary email address could somehow be related to the current status of my Education benefits.

Could someone please help me clarify the following?

1. Is my GitHub account currently recognized as an active verified GitHub Education teacher, given that my new application is shown as Approved?

2. Is it normal for the Education benefits page to continue showing that I am waiting for access to all benefits more than five days after approval?

3. Why does my account currently show only Copilot Free under Settings → Copilot → Features, even though my teacher verification has been approved?

4. Is there any particular reason why I initially regained Copilot Pro after the approval and subsequently lost that access?

5. Could having my personal email address as the primary email, while my institutional email remains associated with the same GitHub account, affect the activation or renewal of my GitHub Education benefits?

6. Is there any action I should take on my side, or should I simply continue waiting for the approved benefits to be fully activated?

I do not want to submit another teacher application unnecessarily because my current application is already shown as Approved. My main concern is to make sure that my renewed teacher verification has been correctly associated with my existing GitHub account and that there is no issue preventing my Education benefits from being fully activated.

I have not included screenshots or personal information in this post, in accordance with the guidance for this category. If any additional information is required to investigate the issue, please let me know the appropriate way to provide it privately.

One additional detail that may be relevant:

I checked my institutional email and found a message from GitHub stating that my previous academic coupon had expired. The message also says that, if I am still a student or teacher, I may apply for a new academic discount coupon.

This is exactly what I did: after my previous teacher benefits expired, I submitted a new teacher application, which is now shown as Approved in my Education benefits settings. However, the new benefits still do not appear to have been fully activated on my account.

I thought this additional information might help clarify the timeline of the issue.

Hello buddy! After reading what you said, I think the best thing you could do would be to submit a ticket directly to GitHub Support so they can help you with your issue. Explain to them that your GitHub Copilot Pro plan, which was provided through the educational program, switched to a free plan after a while, which isn't normal.

While you're waiting for a response from them, you can wait to see if it's a possible verification error, so you could also try refreshing your accounts in your work tools or switching your email address setting the institutional email as primary meanwhile. If none of those options work, then wait until support responds to your ticket
