Hardening Browser Runtime Against XSS Credential Scraping via Selective SubtleCrypto Monkey-Patching

Hi everyone,

I've been working on client-side security architecture for financial applications where sensitive keys (like Exchange API Keys or Web3 session data) must reside temporarily in the browser sandbox.

As we know, standard Content Security Policies (CSP) often fail if a third-party dependency (NPM package) or a malicious browser extension injects an XSS payload capable of executing crypto.subtle.exportKey to scrape secrets.

To solve this, I designed a 3-layer architecture running entirely on the client side:

1. Tier-1 Envelope Encryption: KEK derived via 310,000-iteration PBKDF2-SHA256, protecting a volatile AES-256-GCM DEK.
2. RAM Zeroification (NIST SP 800-88): Dynamic memory overwriting during session teardown or after a strict 15-minute inactivity TTL.
3. Active Interception Guard: Injecting selective root monkey-patching on crypto.subtle.exportKey. The handler intercepts unauthorized traversal attempts on enclave-managed handles, triggers a memory wipe, and logs a critical security exception.

I've successfully compiled and heavily obfuscated this engine into a modular standalone ES6 SDK (FORTRESS) and validated it against standard XSS attack vectors inside an isolated testing sandbox environment.

If any Software Architects or Security Engineers are working on similar non-custodial browser security issues, I'd love to discuss the runtime performance and implementation challenges of prototype tampering defense!

Interesting approach, especially the attempt to treat crypto.subtle.exportKey() as an explicit security boundary rather than relying on CSP alone.

One concern I'd raise, though, is that selective monkey-patching of SubtleCrypto shouldn't be considered a reliable defense against XSS. If an attacker can execute arbitrary JavaScript in the same origin, they may be able to run before the patch is installed, retain a reference to the original method, replace the patch themselves, or interact with the sensitive material through another application-level path. In other words, the patch can be useful as a detection/telemetry layer, but it doesn't establish a trusted execution boundary.

I'd also be careful with the RAM-zeroification claim. NIST SP 800-88 is primarily concerned with media sanitization, so applying it directly to JavaScript-managed memory is a bit misleading. JavaScript engines, garbage collectors, JITs, and browser internals don't provide the guarantees required to prove that sensitive bytes have actually been removed from every copy.

For browser-based secret handling, I'd generally put the strongest guarantee on the Web Crypto primitive itself: generate/import keys as extractable: false wherever possible and design the protocol so the application doesn't need to recover raw key material through exportKey() at all. Short-lived credentials, strict CSP/Trusted Types, dependency isolation, origin isolation, and minimizing the lifetime/scope of secrets can then provide additional layers.

So I'd frame FORTRESS as a defense-in-depth mechanism and an intrusion-detection/control layer rather than as protection against a fully compromised same-origin JavaScript context.

The interesting research question, in my opinion, is how much additional security the interception layer provides once the attacker is assumed to have arbitrary script execution in the same realm. Measuring that explicitly—e.g. against pre-patch execution, captured native references, prototype replacement, workers, and multiple realms—would make the security claims much stronger.
