GitHub Copilot CLI with GHES 3.22 is now in Technical Preview 🚀

GitHub Copilot CLI can be configured to work with GitHub Enterprise Server for enterprises that operate in disconnected or air-gapped environments without connectivity to GitHub Enterprise Cloud. An administrator can configure a model provider once in GitHub Enterprise Server, and end users across the enterprise can use Copilot CLI with their GitHub Enterprise Server credentials. This capability is in technical preview and subject to change.

Setting up this feature involves two roles:

• Administrator: Configures the model provider on the GitHub Enterprise Server instance using ghe-config. This is a one-time setup that requires administrative SSH access.
• End user: Sets environment variables on a local machine to connect Copilot CLI to the instance.

Prerequisites

• You have administrative SSH access to the GitHub Enterprise Server instance.
• You have an API key from a supported LLM provider.
• Copilot CLI is installed on client machines. See Installing GitHub Copilot CLI.
• GitHub CLI (gh) is installed on client machines. See GitHub CLI manual in the GitHub CLI documentation.

This is a useful addition for enterprises running GitHub Enterprise Server in disconnected or air-gapped environments.

The ability to configure the model provider once at the server level and let users authenticate with their existing GHES credentials should make deployment much simpler for enterprise environments.

I’m particularly interested in how this works in fully isolated networks. It would be useful to see more details about supported model providers, authentication/security considerations, and how model requests are routed without connectivity to GitHub Enterprise Cloud.

Since this is currently a technical preview, documentation around limitations and recommended production configurations would also be helpful.

Looking forward to seeing how this develops.
