500 errors usually mean GitHub's server tripped over something during the handshake.

A few quick things worth checking:

• GitHub Status: Check githubstatus.com to make sure auth services aren't having an outage right now.
• Incognito Mode: Try logging in via a private window or clear cookies—stale session tokens can mess up the SSO redirect.
• IdP Setup / Expired Cert: If you're the org admin, double-check your SAML/IdP settings (like Okta or Entra/Azure AD). An expired certificate or misconfigured attribute format is a super common culprit for 500 errors on SSO.

If everything looks normal on your end, you'll probably need your org admin to reach out to GitHub Support so they can pull the internal server logs for that error ID.
