My GitHub Sponsors application for @lyrae-versebound has remained pending with no apparent change.

All setup and financial institution registration is complete and green.

I attempted to contact GitHub Support to request a status check/manual review, but the Support portal routes the request to the Copilot support bot. The bot tells me to contact GitHub Support, effectively creating a loop with no apparent way to reach a human reviewer.

As far as I can determine, the Sponsors application requirements have been completed and I have not received a request for additional information.

Could a GitHub moderator or Sponsors team member please check whether the application is actually in the review queue, whether anything is blocking it, or whether a manual review is required?

Hi @lyrae-versebound ! A pending GitHub Sponsors application usually means it is waiting for GitHub’s review. GitHub says the review can take a few days, and a green financial setup does not always mean the approval is finished.

Community members cannot see private application queues or check what is blocking an individual application, so nobody here can confirm whether a manual review is needed.

I would suggest:

Check your GitHub email and spam folder for any request for more information.
Do not submit multiple new applications while one is pending.
If it has been much longer than a few days, reply to your existing support request with your GitHub username, the date you applied, and a screenshot of the pending status. Ask specifically for it to be routed to the GitHub Sponsors team.

Unfortunately, there may not be anything else to change if all steps are already complete. It may simply need more review time. GitHub’s documentation also says Sponsors applications can take a few days to be reviewed: GitHub Sponsors application guide.

Thank you! That helps a lot. 🙂 I’ve already got a support request open, so I’ll reply there with the application date, username, and a screenshot of the pending status and ask if they can route it specifically to the GitHub Sponsors team.

One thing I’m still a little uncertain about is eligibility. Most of what I’ve been doing publicly is helping out open-source projects through contributions, fixes, and PRs, rather than being the official maintainer of a large open-source repository myself. I’m not entirely sure whether GitHub Sponsors is intended only for maintainers of their own public open-source projects, or whether contributors who regularly help other projects are eligible too.

My work partner and I also have quite a few private repositories, so we’re currently debating whether one of them needs to be sacrificed to the Internet and made public for the application. 😅

You should be eligible based on what you described. GitHub’s wording says that anyone who contributes to an open-source project can become a sponsored developer—it is not limited to people who own or maintain a large repository.

Contributions can include code, PRs, bug reports, issue triage, documentation, design, mentoring, and similar work. So regular contributions to other open-source projects absolutely count.

I would not make a private repository public only for the application. Private work is not a problem, but it also does not need to be “sacrificed to the Internet.” 😄 If you want to make your work easier for reviewers or future sponsors to understand, you could link a few public PRs, issues, or projects you contributed to in your profile or Sponsors introduction.

A public project of your own may be helpful as a portfolio item, but it does not appear to be a requirement for eligibility. The important part is that your public open-source contributions show the value you provide.
