When building video preview cards, CMS integrations, or creator analytics dashboards, developers often need to display or extract YouTube video thumbnails.

A common mistake is spinning up a headless browser (Puppeteer / Playwright) just to take a screenshot, or hitting unauthenticated endpoints that return low-resolution 320x180 WebP files with heavy compression artifacts.

Understanding the YouTube CDN Stream Hierarchy

Every video uploaded to YouTube has its visual assets hosted across img.youtube.com and i.ytimg.com:

https://img.youtube.com/vi/<VIDEO_ID>/maxresdefault.jpg  --> 1920x1080 (Full HD / 4K master)
https://img.youtube.com/vi/<VIDEO_ID>/sddefault.jpg     --> 640x480   (Standard Def)
https://img.youtube.com/vi/<VIDEO_ID>/hqdefault.jpg     --> 480x360   (High Quality fallback)
https://img.youtube.com/vi/<VIDEO_ID>/mqdefault.jpg     --> 320x180   (Medium Quality)
https://img.youtube.com/vi/<VIDEO_ID>/default.jpg       --> 120x90    (Thumbnail icon)

The maxresdefault Fallback Gotcha:

If a video was uploaded in 720p or lower, or is very old, maxresdefault.jpg returns a 404 or a 120x90 placeholder image with black bars. A robust extractor must check naturalWidth or test HTTP status before displaying, falling back gracefully to sddefault.jpg or hqdefault.jpg.
