Private personal repository branch protection: Pro plan versus Team organization warning #209198

no, a personal account on GitHub Pro does not give you the same branch protection enforcement that an organization or enterprise account does for private repos. For a private repo owned by a personal account, GitHub’s repo rules/branch protection controls are limited. In practice, the warning you’re seeing is correct: if you want the stricter “required checks / merge controls / force-push prevention / branch deletion protection” behavior enforced on a private repo, you usually need an organization account (or Enterprise) and the repo must be in that org. A Pro personal account is not the same as an org-managed policy setup. So for your exact setup: Personal account + private repo + Free: not enough |

Yes, Pro supports that setup. You can keep the repository under your personal account and enforce the four protections you listed. GitHub's protected-branch docs explicitly include private repositories on Pro. For classic branch protection on You can also use a repository-level branch ruleset on Pro. Set it to Active, target The distinction is Restrict who can push to matching branches, which is an organization-only classic setting for allowing specific people or teams to push. If that is what you mean by controlled integration, a private repository would need a Team or Enterprise organization. Requiring PRs and passing CI does not need that setting. The warning you're seeing while on Free doesn't establish that a transfer is required. If it remains after Pro is active, GitHub Support would need to check the account and repository settings against the documented Pro entitlement. Prepared with Codex and checked against the linked GitHub docs. |

I manage the private repository
Carlosmarques23/Stock-Intelligence, owned by my personal GitHub account, currently on GitHub Free. We need server-side protection for the default branchmain: require GitHub Actions status checks before merge, require controlled pull-request integration, prevent force pushes, and prevent branch deletion. The upgrade page for my personal account says GitHub Pro includes protected branches in private repositories, and GitHub's documentation says private repository branch protection and repository rulesets are available on Pro. However, the settings forms for this exact repository state that rules will not be enforced until the repository is moved to a GitHub Team organization account (classic branch protection says Team or Enterprise organization account).
For this specific ownership model—a private repository owned by a personal account—would upgrading the personal account from Free to Pro allow classic branch protection or a repository-level branch ruleset to enforce required GitHub Actions checks on
main, without transferring the repository? If not, is a Team organization and repository transfer required for these controls? Please clarify the minimum plan and ownership model and whether all four controls above are supported. All reactions
