restore deleted organization

[dillon-710]

Hello, I accidentally deleted my organization on git hub is there a way to recover it or at least the repositories?

Unfortunately there’s no “undo” button for deleting an organization on GitHub, but you may still be able to get it back if you move fast.

Open a ticket with GitHub Support right away at support.github.com.
Deleted repos are usually kept on their servers for around 90 days before they’re wiped, so the sooner you ask, the better. Give them the exact org name, roughly when you deleted it, and your username. They’ve restored deleted orgs for people before, but it’s not guaranteed, and they normally only do it for accounts on a paid plan.

!! Don’t create a new org with the same name yet. The name becomes free after deletion, and reusing it can get in the way of a restore.
While you wait, check for copies. Anyone who cloned the repos has the full history on their machine. Also look for forks on personal accounts, and any CI or deployment servers that pulled the code. Those can be pushed into a new org later if Support can’t help.

One thing to know: even if they restore it, team permissions and release attachments won’t come back, so you’ll have to re-add members by hand. Issues, PRs and wikis usually do come back with the repos.

Good luck, in most cases where people acted within a few days, Support was able to bring it back.
